He practiced medicine in Kansas City 42 years, specializing in bacteriology and pathology, and for the last 35 years has been a professor in these fields at the Kansas City-Western Dental College. Dr. Stewart was born 7 taining a reserve commission until his death. in Platte County, Missouri. He was a colonel in World War I re- His hobby was poetry and he was urged by Dean Rinehart to have his poems published. , which is dedicated to the Kan- They were published in 194-0 in a book, '4Poems of a Doctor sas City-Western Dental College. In the introduction Dr. R. J. Rinehart said Dr. Stewart 9 was not conscious of building a memorial when he wrote his poems, nor was he endeavoring to make his name remembered-although he succeeded in doing both. Dr. Stewart was a great lover of boys and greatly enjoyed teaching. He would often close his lectures with a poem and occasionally, on a hot sultry summer afternoon, he would yield to the request of his students and recite from his vast memory collection of epics. The many students and graduates of the University of Kansas City School of Dentistry regret the sudden and untimely death of Dr. Stewart as he was loved by all who knew him. RETROSPECTION A doctoris life Fd choose again: Pd live it as I did before. , I doubt that I could raise my score By one degree or letter. Perhaps some changes I might make, But when accountings I would take, We,d find I'd made a great mistake, 'Twas worse instead of better. Iid want to graw up on a farm, Be pure in heart, and strong in arm, Be tempered by sunshine and storm, Where folks can walk a mile. To live among the birds and trees, Among the flowers and honey bees, W'here one knows all the folks he sees, And greets them with a smile. Nobetter home lid want to know Than that where silvery ripples flow, And trees like stately giants grow. I'd want my parents, too. And when the hours for play would come With the same crowd Iid want to run, And last, I'd want one loyal chum, And that chum would be you. Pd cure the sick, relieve their pain, The youthful mind I'd strive to train, Pd live the simple life. And when the time would come to wed, You well can guess from what Iive said Who to the altar would be led, There to become my wife. And then, as on life's journey runs, I'd want three stalwart, handsome sons, Three boys just like the present ones, No other kind would do. And if youid ever see the way That mother acts from day to day, I think you'd join with me and say That she would want them too. I do not wish to here imply My life has been a cloudless sky. I would not have it so that I Should never taste of sorrow. There are clouds at times for everyone, But when they from the sky are done, 'Tis sweet to know the friendly sun Shines brighter on the morrow. --E. L. Stewart TWENTX ONE
