As students we are justly proud of this fact and can best show you evidence of this growth by asking you to accompany us on an imaginary journey through the various departments of our wonderful institution. This meager description we will supplement by "proof positive" in the pictorial evidence which follows. After passing through the south entrance, our attention is attracted first to the administration office where Dr. Rinehart, our Dean, and his office staff ably conduct the business of the college. Opposite the office is the library, containing numerous volumes on scientific, dental, and medical litera- ture of interest to the student and practitioner alike. East of the library is the museum which contains an interesting collec- tion of specimens, and the famous Cogswell Exhibit. This exhibit shows complete procedure for operations in Oral Surgery,'beautifully illustrated by three hundred models made of wax and soap with each successive step care- fully explained. We shall now go into the sophomore laboratory. This well-lighted labora- tory is modernly equipped with gas and air lines, casting machines, electric wax eliminating furnace, new steel stools, dental engines, lathes, and other conveniences which go to make up an efficiently equipped laboratory. Proceeding on to the second floor we are immediately impressed by the size and appearance of the infirmary which extends the full length of the south front of the second floor. Neatness and order prevail here 'where each student is taught the practical side of his dental education under the super- vision' of competent and alert instructors. It is the ambition of every under- classman to become eligible for infirmary work. il' - ,f :J ,X 1, l fi ffl NX-Rial ,..,. --cm., wg -.. . - v , -aim ..,-.. . -use-fnaff-W-:m,:-games-sammy,--wvumw 4-M1 Y .. . . .vanwuhwu-,we-wwuweyn-unammvmummnmrwasa-an-essmww-fwwws-,-it-f-.,-W,,,-,,,,. This clinic is under the supervision of a graduate hygienist and two internes who are appointed annually from the current graduating class. The funds are provided by the estate of the late Dr. Howard S. Lowry. In the west end of the infirmary is the prosthet.ics laboratory with dis- play models showing the various types and designs in artificial dentures and restorations. . Next we come to the recently .enlarged Orthodontia department where two newelectric welding machines and other equipment have been installed for handling chrome-alloy appliance materials in the correction of irregulari- ties of the teeth. Other departments on this floor for specializing are the Ceramics, Oral Surgery, Radiodontia and casting roomg On the third floor we find the science departments with fully equipped laboratories for experiments and research in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Metallurgy, and Pathology. There are also two large lecture rooms and a large technic laboratory which is complete in every detail. On the fourth floor we find a newly built ampitheater type lecture room, Anatomy and Physiology Laboratories with sufficient cadavers and tables for dissection. Now that we have completed our little journey, I feel sure that you have been impressed by the completeness of our institution and will agree that progress is evident in every department of our college. I ai ia PROFESSIONAL SERVICES E WHO has selected a profession as his vocation has offered his life s work for others. It is true that the laborer is worthy of his hire but first in the mind of a true professional man or woman are the ideals of a com petent, honest, and enthusiastic service. Striving to please may be in a sense a crowning grace, but if it is not backed by intelligence, sincerity, and self abrogation it is as empty as the beat ing of a bass drum without the leading instruments in operation. We have known men who have made a supreme effort on the surface to please but to those who knew the facts, their services were actually damaging and deadly instead of beneficial. The fatal period in many lives is during the time of preparation The temptation to idle, to trade industry for pleasure, to attempt to fool those who are trying to help, or to use a common phrase "to get byf, is much too prevalent. Regret, remorse, fear, and resentment always come later to canker such a neglectful and stupid person. A cultured manner is essential, but true culture is from the heart One may smile, bow, be attentive, and polite, and yet be a villain. Culture is nat urally acquired in the persistent and sincere application to the thing one has set out to do. The same endeavor that builds ability and culture builds char acter, the final, lasting and influential quality that awards success. There is nothing new or original in these simple admonitions, but like the repetition of the technic of our tasks it finally becomes a part of our being. The immortal structure pursuant to a true professional career is summed up by Shakespeare who sounded the depths of nature in these words "This above all. To thine own self be true, And it must follow as the night the day, ' Thou cans't not be false to any man." ix- R. . M. James, Jr. Ficca Rauch Schuman HE Greek letter organizations are well represented in our institution. In order to preserve harmony in both feeling and efficiency of these organi- zations the Interfraternity Council which is composed of four members of the faculty and the presidents from each of the three fraternities, meet as a working unit to determine the rules for pledging and for social activities. The feeling of good fellowship existing between these organizations is in a large measure due to the efforts of this body which gives its time and service for the benefit of our fraternal groups. 44 E V' 'Ni i ! The very fact that we chose dentistry as a profession is evidence that we are not content with standing still, but will always strive to broaden our knowledge and make this world a better place in which to live. There are a few who will continue their education in various colleges but the most of us will have to be content with learning from the hard School of Experi- ence and advance ourselves in the particular field of dentistry in which we are most interested. Up to this time we have been more or less clannish, always associated with those interested in about the same things we are. Our associations from now on will be with the world and let us develop the art of friendship to the highest degree. By entering the dental profession at this time we have opportunities which are envied by our predecessors. Let's make the most of these oppor- tunities and set our ambitions high. Our success, in part can be attributed to the dental profession as a whole so let's reciprocate by being active in the local, state, and national dental societies and give all we can for the advancement of dentistry. As a parting word, let's remember to mix pleasure with work, enjoy life, and be a slave to nothing. XV. M. Class Student Council Sec.-Treas., Junior Class ELL mates, for the past four years we have pulled at the oars together. Our voyage in the -professional school has not been devoid of squalls, flurries and typhoons. Through the hours of darkest despair we have pulled steadily, in perfect harmony, with a certain warm feeling in our hearts, for every minute brings us nearer our home port, our journey's end. Soon we shall have completed our maiden voyage. We shall have proved our worthiness. We must, however, soon prepare ourselves for a much greater journey. This journey will be without the guidance hitherto known to us, and every man will be the captain of his own fortune. We will guide our individual crafts to all points of the compass. Each path will present hardships to be conquered. Let us not forget in these hours the spirit of cooperation, comradeship, workmanship and optimism we so nobly exhibited on our voyage through school. We have one more year in which toguide our ship into the harbour suc- cessfully. Let us hope we can do our job as well as the men preceding us. Let us be careful to avoid the hidden shoals and bars which might mar our suc- cessful entrance into the harbour and our subsequent journey into the great searof experience. E. H. President Vice-President Secretary-Treasurer - EARLY two years havepassed since we started on our career of den- tistry. We have had numerous successes, and many failures. Each failure was valuable because it taught us enumerable things. Acknowledgment must be made to the aimless accommodations of Mr. Dentech and Miss Duroform. Their patience was endless, their immunity to pain was a surprise and boon to all of us. They had the foresight to become infected with pyorrhea alveolaris thus allowing the struggling student to re- move and replace the teeth when the procedure became too difficult. We are greatly indebted to the faculty for their unselfish, patient, and undying efforts in trying to teach us the fundamentals of our profession. VVe have all had our more serious moments and at the same time we have ' had our humor which is essential to well being. In the following way I will try to recall to you some of the incidents that have supplied our relaxationsz "Things I wish I had." Oliver's Suction System. Long's "Burp." NEWMAN President Vice-President S ec1'eta1fy- Treasmfer SPIRING to those heights which may some day mean success We have speedily progressed past our first step in the field of dentistry. We have reached a turning pointin our lives, which necessitates the forming of de-A cisions that will have a lasting effect upon our future success and happiness. For us life is beginning to assume more definite proportions. The door of opportunity is open to those of us willing to exert our best efforts in this, our chosen field. If We conscientiously apply ourselves, forever keeping our ob- jective in view, we will derive from each course its utmost value and our life work will be a credit to the training we have received. It is with confidence and determination to succeed that we should continue our efforts, not only through our next three years of instruction, but through- out our professional career. Let us not limit our ideas of success to financial gain, but strive to be worthy members of our future profession. Let us add distinctive qualities to our Work, that its character will be outstanding, not forgetting that in order to do this we must first achieve and maintain a balanced state of physical and mental fitness essential to our Well being. We are learning to observe and study the work of man and nature, to formulate ideas and exercise judgment of our own. Our foundation has been set, our inborn qualities are being determined and developed according to our efforts. In realizing that success requires years of preparation and grim determi- nation, we should remember the words of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: 'fHeights by great men reached and kept, VVere not attained by sudden flight, But they while their companions slept, lVere toiling upward in the night." S f X T5 TI-IE Elatruslo . . scnuauai WHAT is this apparition against the darkened sky before the night wind? A father on a fleet horse, across his arm his sick child. Behind him is the grizzly king of terror and death, the Erl-King. The child trembles as he hears the seductive voice of ghostly horror whispering of wonderful tho' terrible things. The fast thud of the horse's hoofs in an ever increasing tempo fails to blot out the sound. "Thou lovely boy, come go with me, to my magic abode where flowers and golden robes await thee." But the child is terrified. The cajoling voice as it filters through the porches of his ears has a sinister tone. He turns and clings closer to his father. The father tries to reassure him by saying it is only the wind in the dead leaves. The Erl-King comes closer and makes more enticing promises but the child and his father both recognize it as the infernal crackiof doom. The horse flies faster and a third time the Erl-King comes back. This time he reveals himself in his true colors. He says l'XVilling or not T will seize thee by force." "Father, my father! he has done me harm." It is all over now. Xlhen the terrified father opens his cloak the lovely child is dead. Death has outstripped him in the eternal race for a human soul. I Franz Schubert wrote his imperishable music to Goethe's poem when he was but seven- teen. For the past hundred years musicians have been unravelling new beauties from it. Maness Dr. Chastain G. Porter Dr. Roy James Rinehart Dr. iWayne W. White N APRIL, 1916, at the Kansas City Dental College, there was formed an organization known as the Cabletow Fraternity, with the purpose of gain- ing the benefits of Masonic brotherhood and association. The fraternityls growth was phenomenal in membership, addition of chap- ters, and interest developed. In trying to expand our Work it was necessary to merge with some other A organization of like nature, so after careful consideration a merger was ef- , fected in 1925, with the Trowel Fraternity, thus creating a strong national it . . j organization. From the year 1925 to the present time the chapter has had the usual "ups and downs" of fraternities. The chapter was dormant a few years, but enjoyed large membership and varied activities up to the present writing. lg , N7 - 1 l N- T531 :ex f. The initiation was held in the old Midland Hotel at Seventh and Walnut Streets. There were twelve men initiated as charter members of Nu Chapter. Delta Sigma Delta was the first dental fraternity to have a chapter in the Kansas City Dental School. It was about this time that the Western Dental College was founded and soon after the founding of the new school another fi chapter of Delta Sigma Delta was installed there. Upon the merging of the lm two schools the two chapters merged to form what is now Nu Chapter. :ji pm lmggfjiggi 14" 'f' .ft J f, I 1 it ,JH f 1 f , Iv' . .., f, ,f af, ,i , - f-, , I , ' 'ffl X l. . . In the pioneer days of western Kansas we find in the midst of cowboys, Indians, outlaws, and sand storms, a young and courageous boy known as Dr. Tritt, cutting hair. After this gruesome task he called for the key better known as Whis-Key. Tritt prefers round heads to the square and tapering because there are fewer plane angles. Recently Tritt remarked to a customer, "Haven't I shaved you before P" "No," replied the customer, "those scars are from playing football." The instructors have their fingers crossed against the time when "Tiny', Milstein enters the extraction room. There is always the chance that he might become absent minded and extract a rabbit from the patient,s mouth instead of the third molar he was supposed to go after. John Wyclie is known as the water gun warrior. He thought of the idea when henwas water boy for a threshing crew. He predicts in the near future it will be a required course in college for protection in case of a call to arms. John was awarded a medal of honor for doing the manual of arms with his water syringe more efficiently than any of his classmates. Information to all curious eyes-that's not a hooch bottle in Lebowitz pocket, it is a bottle of hair oil. He learned the old adage "be prepared" when he -was a boy scout. We bow our heads to Hadley and Brown, the two boys who gave to the world "Keep in health by doing the belly bust." After taking years to per- fect the experiment it was demonstrated in Madison Square Garden to the astonishment of thousands. In slow motion it demonstrates how every muscle of the body is brought into action and students of the science of health will long remember these two stalwart blimps. After a hard day's work in the clinic little Billy Burke yearns for blue waters, and he has a good recipe for perfect relaxation. His- many friends offer him ample assistance. ' Mensch and Hagen are the official blower uppers of the senior class. They have decided it is much better to confine their blowing to bubbles than to blow on the air line from the freshman lab. Dr. Moore is not at all pleasant when the lights go out under his incubator. I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I 1 I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I , I 1. 5.1- . f A iff: x l I I if III?-sg! I I N K" ! SCANDAI.-SI-IEET Two investigators along Troost Avenue are our friends, Casey Childs, and Jessie James Harris. Their real specialty seems to be track sitting, and like true comrades onepdepends on the other for help and assistance. Oh yes, the boys are satisfied now. They just wanted to see if the motorman made a round trip. Budd may forget Kansas City when he leaves, but some of the people with missing teeth will forever remember him. It has also been rumored that Budd is a member of the prohibition squad as he does away with the evi- dence in each case. The fire in his eyes beamed more softly as he said: "Fair queen thou art the brightest gem of womankindf' Helen insists that if Howard does not stop writing poetry she will not be seen with him. "Slippery Slim" Gale has been noticed hanging around our City'Hall with a forlorn look on his countenance. The coppers take a joke too seriously. Jack Caldwell broke all speed records from the clinic to the extraction room. His foot prints can be seen for many years to come, along the hallway. Hunter, the snake eye king, will be glad at any time to exchange his crown for an occasional seven. "Hawkshaw" Divine is trying to discover a way to eat his cake and still have itg in other words, how can a fellow have a snifter or two and still persuade his wife to provide provender for him in the morning. V The writer has known Otto for years and can vouch for all of his daring feats on and below a box car. He learned the meaning of various whistles from the freight engine before he could tell the time of day, and was known by the 'bos along the road as the "Wonder Boy"-wondering if he would get to 10th and Troost by the time school started. For the past four years Otto has been a booster for cheaper rates from Kansas City to McAllister, Oklahoma. Orchids to the president of the senior class, the champion of all sleepers. Stew says there is nothing better for the body than a few ten-minute cat naps while dining out. He is not particular as to whether the chair is over- stuffed or otherwise, and on special occasions has been known to curl up in a corner on the floor. Tapping on his door in the early hours of the morning should be stopped. f f 1 rx ii X 1 , J. Dukes is a high class high-binder, Says a faculty member, says he. He orders 'up two large orders. He's a big hearted fellow-on me "I'm forever blowing bubbles." Said Kerr when the casts were porous. So the seniors nicknamed him "Bubbles" Kerr. Q He'll ne'er pour another one for us. While checking and rechecking the records For dirt on William A. Our engineers expressed a wise forethought for the dentist when they so designed the S. S. Consider for a moment, what this feature means to you, it permits you to commence your practice with a sparkling new, inviting, elhcient, fully guar- anteed, trouble-free unit and chair without over-taxing your financial resources, and with- out creating a burdensome overhead expense at the period in practice when thrift in purchasing is most important. New equipment makes a more fitting impression upon the patient, too, and as the practice warrants, a junior unit can be built up to the summit of efficiency expressed in the S. S. He entered into a pleasant conversation with me, introducing himself as Dr. So-and-So, a dentist. 1 In surprise I turned to look and found that he was a dentist who had done some very fine work for me here in Kansas City more than twenty years ago. He remembered me welt and we visited pleasantly. He told me of his rise to the top of his profession - good money -- invest- ments in so-called Hsecuritiesn--the crash of twenty-nine and of his ' struggle since that time to pay his expenses and keep his son and ip daughter in college. But here is the tragic part of this incident. While I have quite a jolo of dental work to he done, this dear old gentleman will not get the joh. I I know him as a fine dentist of years gone by hut those unmistak- ahle signs of old age will compel me to select a younger dentist. Fur- ' thermore, I want the advantage of the most modern training and tj development in dental technique. ill 5 My lawyer is a man past seventy.
