Though the Conservatory of music has been in operation since 1907, only since 1959 has it held its present position as one of the seven schools of the university. The Conservatory offers seven degrees and also maintains a preparatory and continuation center for preschool children through adults, offering a basic education in music as an avocation. Conservatory students are fortunate in that they are cen- trally located in regard to the various cultural events in the Kansas City area. In addition to voice and instrumental studies, the Conserv- atory also offers an extensive dance course. Dr. Archie N. Jones, Dean of the school, is well known for his numerous choral compositions and arrangements, as well as several text books. Four of our girls were tapped for Delta Alpha with three Max AJ W! if holding offices in Torch and Scroll. Miss Carole Brentson, our President, was crowned Sno-Ball queen, with Sue Ellmaker as her Princess, and Miss Judy Puckett reigned as Beauty at the Beauty and Beast dance. The ADPi's pledged twenty-one top girls, initiating sixteen in February. To uphold our high ideals in scholarship, the ADPi's held a contest between the pledge mothers and pledge daughters for the highest grade average. The outcome was a bean and steak dinner at Waid's Restau- rant, followed by a party given by the pledges for the active chapter. The year ended with the excitement of Bum Friday and a farewell to the graduating seniors who have worked for four years to put Alpha Delta Pi on top. FIRST SEMESTER Carole Brentson . . . Highlighting the year were the first and second semester pledge-ins, the annual "Kangaroo" Auto Rallye, a "walkout" to Kansas State and Kansas University, and a magnificent initiation at which Ron Hyatt, Larry Nussbaum, and Joel Ray became brothers. Scholarship again ranked high among UMKC Societies, and AEPi teams played mightily in intramurals finishing among the top teams in archery and badminton. The fraternity is, however, in the midst of a rebuilding program which will culminate in the fall of 1965. The Alpha Phi Alpha graduate chapter, Beta Lambda, in Kansas City is assisting in the pro- gram. By 1965-66, it is the hope of the fraternity to once again to be on top and to have the recognition that nationally be- longs to Alpha Phi Alpha. During the year, Delta Rho Chapter gave several private parties for its members and guests. The biggest event of the year was the attendance of the Alpha Phi Alpha Mid-West Regional Convention held at Lincoln Univer- sity in Jefferson City, Missouri. The chapter has participated in the Inter-Fraternity Council, and held the position of Sec- retary. The chapter members purchased stock in the Library Campaign and supported other campus events. Literally speaking, a yearbook is a school's or organization's factual and pictorial record of the year's events. Of course, in a school yearbook, the emphasis is upon the photographic approach. And so a yearbook is just so many pages filled with pictures and copy, and, hopefully, bound in an attrac- tive cover. But what else is this book? To the students who support and receive it, it is a personal record of what their organizations accomplished, how their uni- versity flourished, and what they, themselves, did. Each of the students holds his own personal interest in the book that was produced to represent him. To the faculty and staff, each new yearbook is a remembrance in print of that year's student body, its leadership, its projects, and its social and scholastic life. Yet from my point of view the most important question becomes what is a yearbook to its editor? From the purely physical aspect, it is countless hours of toil, fits of nerves from nearly missed deadlines, and permanently stained hands, stained by carbon paper, ink, and photo developing chemicals. No devoted editor could ever deny that the finished product was well worth the strain and effort. Now, as the final pages are sent to the printer, I realize what a large chunk of myself is wrapped up in these pages. When I can hold a completed copy of the 1965 KANGAROO in my hands, then I can rightly say what a yearbook is to its editor. Presently, this yearbook is the culmina- tion of a year's effort. My only desire is to have pleased those for whom it is produced.
