DR. RICHARD lVl. DRAKE Chancellor With Vision for the Future, Chancellor Drake Reviews Progressive Developments The existing increase in the number of freshmen who entered The University this fall brought an incen- tive to the campus that quickly made itself felt not only in the heightened activities of students but in the life of the classroom. Students who attended The Univer- sity last year had a large part in the stepped-up recruit- ment program which The University conducted during the summer, and the response of these efforts was manifest in the excellent Orientation Week program. When the Second Annual Leadership Conference was held in October, it was indeed evident that students had caught the spirit of a University moving forward. The new era in student activities inaugurated last year with the office of the University Center continued to expand, and the program directed by Mr. Handy and his staff has developed a growing life of its own. With the dedication of the University Center to be held this coming September, student life at The University of Kansas City will indeed come of age. Other inspiring announcements have been made this year. For the first time, annual gifts and grants to The University exceeded the one-million dollar mark, show- ing that we have a growing host of people in this com- munity interested in The University's welfare. The School of Pharmacy, which this year celebrated its 75th anniversary, announced a proposed S600,000 building and the School of Dentistry, celebrating its 80th anni- versary is well along with a three-million dollar build- ing program. The two buildings will have adjoining locations, and a new health sciences center is in the making at your University. The School of Education, under a recent Ford grant of S625,000 has been de- veloping a master plan for extending its present fine offerings. Altogether, with other divisions and faculties of The University equally interested in the growth of The University's physical and academic facilities, this has been a most productive year. The Administration is again extremely proud of The University's students, who have demonstrated an un- usually strong and understanding interest in the work and progress of University affairs. Together we are building a University of Kansas City that will continue to offer our students the broad, fine-type of higher education that will fit students for places of leader- ship in American life. Richard M. Drake Chancellor The Chancellor and Mrs. Drake entertain new students at a reception during orientation.
