XJ YQQ' CJ STI-1 IVJ4 INS dean, continuing education A busy man with a variety of duties and inter- ests, Dr. Cj Stevens is the Director of the constantly expanding Division for Continuing Education. Dr. Stevens received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. at Louisiana State University. He taught at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, West Virginia, in the department of Speech, and was Director of Radio. Dr. Stevens came to this campus in the fall of 1955 as an As- sistant Professor of Speech and Director of Radio-TV department. He became the Acting Dean of the Evening Division in 1956, and Director of the Department of Continuing Ed- ucation when the department was founded in 1958. Besides his regular duties at the Uni- versity, Dr. Stevens has maintained a continued interest in the musical activities of this area by assisting in the sponsorship of the Modern Jazz Workshop concerts and writing the li- bretto of Straus' opera, Der Rosenkavalier. He is a member of the spech Association of America, Missouri Valley Adult Education As- Sociation, Phi Kappa Phi, Alpha Epsilon Rho, Theta Kappa Phi, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He is married and has a son and daughter. With the leadership of Dr. Stevens the Depart- ment of Continuing Education has expanded 'aDidly to a position of influence and impor- tance on the urban Campus of UKC. I-IUC3-I1 VV. SPEER, dean, GCi.'L1C8.tiCDI1 Dr. Hugh W. Speer, King of Epperson Castle, has been Dean of the School of Education since the, Department of Education became a full school in 1955. From 1948 to that time he was the Chairman of the Education Depart- ment. Dean Speer received his A..B. from American University, his M.A. from George Washington University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His experience in education covers a broad field, from serving as principal of high schools in Fredonia and Hays, Kansas, to director of Veterans Advise- ment Center at UKC from 1945 to 1947. He served with the American Red Cross during World War ll in ltaly'with the lOth Moun- tain Division. From 1951 to 1952 he studied in lran under a Fulbright Grant at the Uni- versity of Tehran, where he also served as advisor to the Ministry of Education on gen- eral revision of the public school system. Dean Speer is a past president of Phi Delta Kappa, and member of Delta Sigma Rho, American Association of School Administrators, Associa- tion of Supervisory Curriculum Development, American Personnel Guidance Association, and the National Education Association. He is mar- ried and the father of two daughters. The Education School, under the leadership of Dean Speer has progressed rapidly in all the varied areas of the education field. 25
