ROBINSON dean, dentistry One of two new deans appointed at the start of this school year, Dr. Hamilton B. G. Robin- son was born in Philadelphia. He received his MS. in 1936 from the University of Pennsyl- vania and D.D.S. in 1943. His first teaching position was with Washington University, St. Louis, in 1937, first as an Assistant Professor, Then as Associate Professor of Pathology until 1944 when he joined the faculty of Ohio State, where he directed the post graduate and clinical teaching divisions. He became the Associate Dean and Chief of the Dental Staff at the University Hospital in 1952. He is a member of Sigma Xi honorary society, presi- dent of the International Association for Den- tal Research, and a past president of the Amer- 'Can Academy of Oral Pathology and of the American Board of Oral Pathology. DV. Robinson is married and has three chil- dren. He succeeds Acting Dean Joseph F. Ja- C9bS. who resigned to return to private prac- l'f-G. Under the leadership of Dr. Robinson, Dlans for the new three million dollar dental school to be construced on the University cam- PUS have been officially announced. V li? JOHN M. SPEOA. dean, law Returning from a four month sabbatical leave in Europe, John M. Speca stepped into the responsible position of acting Dean of the Law school after serving on the law school faculty for twelve years. He received his Ph.B. and LL.B. degrees from University of Notre Dame, and his LL.M. from Duke University. He joined the Law school faculty in '947 as an Assistant Professor of Law, and spent the summers of 1949 and 1950 as a visiting Pro- fessor of law at University of Kansas. In 1952 he became an Associate Professor of law, and assumed the leadership of the school's grad- uate program in 1954. ln the fall of 1958 he was appointed full Professor. Dean Speca has contributed regularly to various legal publica- tions, and was recently appointed to the edi- torial board of the Journal of Family Law . He is a member of Phi Delta Phi, the American Bar Association, Missouri Bar Association, is the treasurer of the Professional lvlen's Club, a member of the Association of American Law Schools, and chairman of the Committee on Family Law. Under Dean Speca's leadership a new 5-point program for raising admission standards to the school has been instituted, a stricter proba- tionary policy has been set-up, and the school core curriculum has been strengthened. JACK W. MURPHY administrative assistant to the chancellor Dr. Jack W. Murphy, Administrative Assistant to the Chancellor, has carried out his varied duties with the aplomb of a talented corpora- tion president. Dr. Murphy served on the faculty of Western Michigan College, Kalama- zoo, Michigan as an Associate Professor of Speech, and directed plays and musicals fOr the drama department there. ln 1955 he moved west to Long Beach State College where he was an Assistant Professor of Speech and Di- rector of the summer theatre. He came to UKC in i956 as an Assistant Professor of Speech and Director of Public Address and Speech Education. He served as debate coach for all three schools where he has taught. ln l958, Dr. Murphy became the Chancellor's Ad- ministrative Assistant, retaining his speech department positions. He received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Wis- consin. His book, Discussion and Debate was published in l95THe is listed in the Speech Journal, and the Directory of American Scholars. Dr. Murphy belongs to Tau Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Rho, Central States Speech Association, Speech Association of America, American Associates of University Professors, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is married and has two children. Dr. Murphy, in his position, has accomplished a great deal for the University. Among these accomplish- ments are his handling of the televised Chan- cellor's Inauguration and the televised Sym- posium on Urban Private Education. 22 J CDI-IN E. BARNETT dean, 8..I l3S and SCi9I1CeS The many and varied duties of the Dean of the Arts and Science college keeps John E. Barnett busy as head of the largest division of the University. Dean Barnett received his Bachelor of Artsdegree in i928 from Harvard University, as well as his Masters in l932, and his Ph.D. in i938 from the same Univer- sity. During the second world war, from i942 to I946, Dean Barnett served with the United States Navy as a Lieutenant. He joined the faculty of The University of Kansas City in l946 as a lecturer in the English Department, and as Assistant Dean of the college of Arts and Science. ln i954 he was appointed Dean of the college Arts and Sciences, a job he has handled with exceptional skill. At the same time he has acted as a stabilizing influence on the plans and activities of the whole Uni- versity in his responsible position as dean of the largest and most fluid school within the University structure. TED R. BRANNEN Cj.98.I1, 'lO'L1SIl.I'1SSS Dr. Ted R. Brannen is one of the new deans appointed at the start of the school year. Dr. Brannen received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Arkansas and his Ph.D. in Economic and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Texas. He served as a lieu- tenant j.g. in the U. S. Navy during the second world war. He served on the faculties of the University of Texas, Texas A.5'M. and the Uni- versity of Arkansas. He also was a Professor of Management at the University of Florida, Gainesville. Previous to his teaching he held positions as an economist with the Texas Com- pany in New York, and was Chief Regional Price Economist of the Office of Price Stabili- zation of the Southwest region from l95O to l952. He also served as Director of Industrial Relations and Co-ordinator of Labor Relations with the Arabian-American Oil Company in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia from l954 to l957. Dr. Brannen wrote The Economic Effects of the i953 Tornado on Waco, Texas , and is working on a book on employee relations in underdeveloped areas. He is married and has two children. Since becoming the Dean of the Business School, Dean Brannen has completely reorgan- ized the entire program of that school. 24 LESLIE L. EISENBRANDT dean, pharmacy Dr. Leslie L. Eisenbrandt,'Dean of the Phar- macy School since l953, joined the faculty of UKC after graduating from Rutgers University with a Ph.D. in l936. He received his Master of Science from Kansas State College, and his A.B. from Emporia College in l932. He started here as an instructor in the Biology Depart- ment, teaching the first classes offered at UKC in physiologyand parasitology. In i942 he joined the faculty of the Dentistry School and served as the Director of Research and Asso- ciate Professor of Physiologly. He joined the Pharmacy School staff in I947, becoming a full Professor in l949. He carried on research work at the University of California from l948 to l949 using radioactive Isotopes. Dean Eisenbrandt is a member of Sigma Xi, Ameri- can Association for Advancement of Science, Scientific Research Society, Kappa Psi, Rho Chi, American Pharmaceutical Society, Society for Biology and Medicine, Society of Phar- macology and Experimental Therapeutics, and American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. Dr. Eisenbrandt is married and has four sons. His six years a head of the Pharmacy school have been marked by increased progress in the curriculum and teaching methods in the ever expanding field of Pharmacy.
