Dr. Drake, as expected, has efficiently led the university through the year. TO THE DEATH OF THE STREET CAR SCHOOL 0 G KG For many years, the University of Kansas City has been known, much to its disgrace, as a streetcar college, as only a local, convenient school that lost its entire student body with the coming of every evening-via the streetcar. KCU had been typed as a school whose students had no spirit, no morale, no esprit des corps. The streetcar became a symbol of reproach for the apathy of KCU's students. 1957 marks the death of a streetcar college. Some insist that this demise is due only to the fact that the Public Tran- sit Company has removed its Troost trolley line, and insist that KCU will now become a bus and automobile college. This view is cynical and superficial, it does not take into account the changes within KCU itself. The most obvious change is embodied in KCU's new building program, which has produced a million-dollar men's dormitory, completed this year, and plans for a new student union building and a women's residence hall. On the academic side, we have added a new and rapidly grow- ing engineering science curriculum. A subtle change is making itself felt in the attitude of the students. Somehow, this year more than any we have known, the students seem to feel that KCU is their Uni- versity, that KCU is a school they can really be proud of. Granted, there have been setbacks, exceptions, and disap- pointments, but still the change is there, it will become more evident in the years ahead. i The streetcar college is dead. In its place remains a college growing in stature, a university that has found itself. The 1957 Kangaroo is intended as a milestone on the road of KCU's progress through the years, a milestone marking the death of a streetcar college, and the birth of a living University.
