Enrollment shot up, new majors were added, two new fraternities organized, the University put the OK on nationals, and plans were made for a bright future. Y" 1 1' f Kent Huckstep, liberal arts sophomore majoring in speech, served as editor of the 'I955 KANGAROO. Experienced in all phases of editing a yearbook, he has performed every task imaginable on the KAN- ' GAROO. Besides being known as the straight man of the comic pair Huckstep 8K Goetz, he is also known for his very active program. This year he was vice-president of three organizations: Tau Kap- pa Nu, Alpha Phi Omega, and Radio-TV Guild, and appeared in "The Sandalwood Box." With his knowledge of campus life and tips obtained from last year when he was associate editor of the '54 KANGAROO, he has tried to present a yearbook typical of the entire university. Staff members not pictured: Malben Jerry Schneider. THE T955 KANGAROO is presented by the staff with a great deal of pride. This is the first KANGAROO in the history of the University of Kansas City not to be sec- tionalized by schools. We realize that we have made mistakes, probably made some people angry, and per- ,M haps injured some relationships. BUT-we have done itl Q This book has set a precedent for future KANGAROOS. Finally the KCU annual is like that of other universities! Maybe this book will help to spark the lagging school spirit, we hope so. We wish next year's editor, Twylc Watson, loads of luck. She will certainly need it. 19. .sri -Wtwim f Barbara Latham, Nancy r , ,H Sally Smith, senior editor, Norma Baker, assistant senior editor, Z lupus l ry Goetz, Betty Kern, Janie Reichman, Clara McDaniel. Since that time, the fraternity has expanded to include chapters in 36 of the now exist- ing dental colleges throughout the United States. Another candidate for the pond gets off to a real flying start. ,,x,A' J I A- - Mqpkg T955 BUM FRIDAY was one of the most successful in years as students turned out in full force for all the events. The tradition of throwing anyone in sight into the duck pond was carried out to the letter as Coaches Mandli and Miller went in along with many others. A giant Bar-b-q started off the schedule with the skit contests following. Theme of the skits was "The Boom of KCU." Tau Kappa Nu and Sigma Beta won the skit trophies and the University Players re- ceived a special award for their "musical melodrama." Fac- ulty members gave the audience an extra, their own special skit, and had everyone in the aisles. After this contest, forty-four students received awards for meritorious service. Then came an all-star talent show. Sports next took the spotlight with egg throwing and balloon blowing contests, and sack, cardboard, and three legged races. Afterwards, Allen Hume was chosen the winner of the beard contest and Jim Collier and Wynona Jones were named King and Queen of Bums. Later in the evening Bounder and Sigma Beta won the song contests. At 9 p.m. the annual Kangaroo Hop began with Jan Garber and his orchestra playing. Bettie Antone, sponsored by Bounder, and Dwaine Kurtz, sponsored by Sigma Beta, were announced as Queen and is ii l V , I l 4,7 Most Fascinating Man. Mayor H. A detailed Orientation was out- lined by chairman Dick Garner and we were oft! Groups dubbed themselves clever names like The Merry Morticians and The Wild Ones. Two politicians were selected from each group to campaign for the steering committee. In three short days students whirled through lec- tures, skit writing, speech making, painting signs, tours and tests. The finale of Orientation was the Beanie Ball. The steering committee was announced and now the freshmen were full fledged students of the University. They could look forward to making friends, to getting adjusted to college life, to going to the dances, and to being a real part of KCU. THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS CITY F ?'.ifZf'Z W-'gg-W , THE U-NEWS became the world news this year as it assumed a cosmopolitan look with news of other univer- sities and colleges all over the country. Lothar Knauth as editor attempted to present all schools equally and did a good iob of it. The Letters to the Editor section seemed to be the most popular spot in the paper as students poured their hearts and souls into words criticizing, in- sulting, and generally griping at the world. Photography for the paper drew many phases not only from the campus but also at a Journalism conference. xi, K X 'S-' run 2859i Q ..-rr' if . 1 .7 ,412 sf' W2 t I f' ,rw l Lothar Knauth, editor ' N I luck Anderson, assistant editor f' M Q f, ff' l in am ' M.. lhf fr 212 ."ff n't'1S2 Q 4 255 ff? 5 3 J fi , C . it as X 4 , M x f f i is ' ff fy X IXN I f X y 71 , .,.N W Q ,,, 5 c C. faif x gg 1 A gy: if".sr32 fx N' ..
