out with the olc. new head coach appointed after devastating season by Haley McCay Going into the 2002-2003 season, the Lady Rebels featured a solid corps of returning players that was complemented with a strong recruiting class of six athletes. " Our returners have gained a lot of valuable experience and worked hard in the off season, " said Coach Aldy (Head Coach 2002-2003). This year Ron Aldy completed his sixth and final season as the head coach for the Lady Rebels. Aldy is widely respected as a determined coach who encourages his players to work hard on and off the court. At least five of Aldy ' s Ole Miss players were named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll each year. Aldy also promoted community service. The Lady Rebels have been involved in activ- ities around Oxford as well as building a community playground and mentoring ele- mentary school children. Aldy succeeded in leading the Lady Rebels to one winning season and two women ' s national bids. The team has fought through several difficult seasons in the last few years. The 2002-2003 season began strong with a 12-3 record including wins over Georgia State and Florida, but the season soon took a discouraging turn with the loss to LSU. The Lady Rebels ended the season with a 13-17 record. Ole Miss began its search for a new Lady Rebels Basketball coach that concluded with the hiring of Carol Ross. Ross, along with the 2003-2004 Lady Rebels, are hopeful that they will recover from previous disappointments and enjoy a winning season. Ross played with the Lady Rebels from 1977 to 1981 and is one of only two players to record 1,000 points, 500 assists and 250 steals in a career. Ross will be assisted by another former Lady Rebel ball player, Peggie Gillom. Gillom played ball at Ole Miss from 1976 to 1980 and will be leaving her position as Head Coach at Texas A M University to assist Ross. Gillom ' s Ole Miss ' all-time leading scorer with 2,486 career points. This duo is out to change the presence of Ole Miss Lady Rebel Basketball. Going into the 2003-2004 season, the ladies are ranked 12th in the Southeastern Conference and are looking to rebound and move up the ladder. 22 ' Basketball is fun and competitive. It lets people see a side that no one knows about. It allows you to be you. " -Carletta Brown a sophomore Guard from Roxie, Miss. women s I

rocky course challenging season causes Rebels to finish 8th at the SEC Tournament by Trey Young The Ole Miss men ' s golf team entered the 2002 - 2003 season with its hopes riding on the youth of the squad and a mixture of underclassmen and newcomers preparing to chart the way for the Rebels. Jordan Dempsey and Jarrod Gardner returned as the most experienced players from last year ' s team, as both players played in every round of competition. A crop of newcomers were called on early to contribute to the 2003 season. Seven new faces were added to the lineup with four of them being freshmen. It was arguably one of the most talented incoming classes the Rebel program had seen in recent years. The best team performance for the Rebels was at Kiawah Island where the Rebels finished in 2nd place with a three total of 887. The rebels were led by Pope Spruiell who had a three day total of 220. Before the close of the fall semester the rebels signed Kyle Ellis of Senatobia, Miss. Ole Miss golf co ach Woody Cowart had this to say on www.olemiss.sports.com about the signing of Ellis, " He is definitely going to help us grow as a program. Kyle has proven his worth on the golf course and in the classroom as a student-athlete and we are looking forward to him joining us at Ole Miss. " Leading the Rebels through the first semester was Jordan Dempsey with a scoring average of 72.4 for 9 rounds. The Rebels started the spring semester at the Taylormade Intercollegiate in Hawaii, where the Rebels finished 17th. The Rebels only got better for the rest of the season which was highlighted by the Rebels shooting nine under as a team during the first round of the Beau Chene Collegiate Classic. Leading the Rebels through the spring semester was Gardner with a scoring average of 74.1. Gardner would go on to have a nice summer playing golf, which culminated in him making t he cut at the United States Amateur. For the 2003 - 2004 season, the Rebels will be led by Spruiell and Gardner. " This is one of the toughest sports. It is one of the hardest to get good at. You do not find someone who is able to pick up a club and in just one month, go out and compete in the SECs. " -Jarrod Gardner a sophomore from Austin, Texas
