(continued from p. 26) Born in Mechanicsville, Va., Mraz grew up wanting to be in music. After a brief period in New York he headed out to California. Mraz, who is best known for his single, Remedy, teamed up with drummer Toca Rivera while playing coffee shops in San Diego. Rivera ' s unique style of playing has helped to individualize Mraz ' s live performances. His album, Waiting For My Rocket to Come, has won him chances to appear on MTV ' s Total Request Live and on various episodes of VHl ' s Love the VO ' s. Opportunity knocked, and Mraz answered when he was given the chance to open for his idol and fellow Virginia native, Dave Matthews. Mraz also has shared venues with musicians such as Bob Dylan. After the excitement of Rumble in the Grove, the week ended with SPB and the Black Student Union jointly sponsoring a Union Blowout with free food and games. The ever-popular jousting game and inflatable obstacle course were there for student ' s enjoyment. This year a casino was set up and an oxygen bar was made available. Welcome Week proved to once again be a success and a good way to ease a student back into school.

Welcome Week Freshman pre-nursing major Karen Fillinger competed for a chance to grab money in the Blizzard-o-Bucks machine by trying to eat a cream pie the fastest. The drummer for Michael Tolcher rocks the wild Rumble in the Grove. Tolcher was a last minute addition to the lineup. Kentucky rap group Nappy Roots got the Grove hopping with one of their top singles AwNaww during Welcome Week ' s last event. Top Left Junior Shamara McCreney also competed for a chance to grab money in the Blizzard-o-Bucks by drinking prune juice from a baby bottle. Bottom Left Michael Tolcher gets the crowd pumped before Norwegian singer Sondre Lerche takes the stage at Rumble in the Grove. welcome wee xk l9
