Welcome Week Making a o in the Grove To conclude the Welcome Week festivities, Rumble in the Grove attracted a record number of people to one of the best performer lineups in the event ' s history, bringing such performers as Jason Mraz and Nappy Roots. by Robin Freeman During the first week of school, the Student Programming Board puts on Welcome Week. After new students (and returning ones) settle in, they are given an opportunity to participate in activities at the Union. On Sunday, August 17, 2003, the first Battle of the Bands was held in the Grove. Various bands performed in a contest to win the chance to open up for Jason Mraz and Nappy Roots during Rumble in the Grove. The battle proved to be a great success, with the band Rhymes with Orange winning. It brought students, alumni, families, faculty and others together for a taste of local music. People came out, threw down blankets and set up chairs, brought food and coolers full of drinks and made an evening of the concerts. A group of local, North Mississippi guys made up the winning band, Rhymes with Orange. Lead singer Steve Sudduth met guitar player Sky Shelton over Christmas break 2002, and the rest is history. The chemistry between them musically prompted the start of a band. From there they brought in drummer Mark Word. Two Ole Miss students, Cole Russell and Clay Lezon rounded out the group, which still had no name. The name that was decided on, Rhymes with Orange, makes sense when you think of their music. There is no word that rhymes with orange, and there is nothing out there like their music. The R B and funk groove of their music make it danceable but not definable to a specific genre. That combination obviously won over the attendants of the Battle of the Bands. Fans were given another chance to see Rhymes with Orange when they returned a few weeks later to play at The Blue Marlin. After the week kicked off with the Battle of the Bands, students were given the opportunity to join different organizations around the school. The always-popular poster sale was set up outside the Union offering students hundreds of choices for their new homes and dorm rooms. A rock climbing wall, t-shirt sale and an organization fair were only a few of the many activities from that week. The activities were designed to give students a chance to meet new people and relax from the stresses of moving in. The organization fair allowed for students to learn about groups on campus that appeal to their specific interests. The S. Gale Denley Student Media Center, College Republicans, the Black Student Union and ROTC were a few of the dozens of organizations that set up in the Circle this year. Rumble in the Grove made for a great first Friday night back in school. People came from all over making this a great success for the University. Groups including Nappy Roots, Jason Mraz and Sondre Lerche played. Rhymes with Orange opened the evening, and fans appreciated the free concert that featured up and coming star, Jason Mraz. Z lstudenl life Pop singer Jason Mraz makes the women go wild with his hit single The Remedy. u
