James Tate Thigpen of Jackson, Mississippi, was named as the school ' s 24th Rhodes Scholar. Thigpen, a )% honor graduate ,was selected as one of 32 dents from throughout the nation for the all expense paid opportunity to study for two years at Oxford University in England. While he ultimately plans to become a physician, Thigpen I pursue a study of politics, economics, and philosophy as a Rhodes Scholar. TR lar Cassie WiUiford of Houston, Mississippi, is the only Mississippian chosen for a 1998-1999 prestigious $30,000 Truman Scholarship. The (laughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Williford was among 657 candidates in the nation nominated for the some 75 scholarships. She plans to attend law school with her eye on a career in public service.
