Pledge Olympics has become an annual event for the Phi Mu pledge class. Sorority and fraternity pledge classes are invited to participate in fun games to win a trophy. Some of the games played this year were the bat race, balloon popping relay, bubble gum in flour relay, three-legged race and tug-of-war. The activities were held on Village Field, October 14 at 2 p.m. The pledge classes that came out on top were Chi Omega and Sigma Chi. All of the fun that day greatly benefitted the LeBonheur Children ' s Hospital in Memphis. The money raised from entry fees and t-shirt sales was donated to the hospital as Phi Mu ' s philanthropy. Almost $2000 was raised through the activity. The Phi Mu pledge class of 1992 would like to thank all of those who participated and made the activity possible. ▲ 2 ▲ 5 310 GREEKS A 4 1. DERBY DAY I n Derby Day, initiated at the University of California in 1930, has developed into one of the traditions of Sigma Chi Chapters across the United States and Canada since its inception. Eta Chapter at Ole Miss sponsored its first Derby Day in 1 963 and since that time it has become one of the most popular events on the campus during the spring semester. This year, the Ole Miss Sigs will join more than 120 other Sigma Chi Chap- ters across the United States and Can- ada in sponsoring Derby Day. The only event of its kind, it brings together cam- pus sororities for a day of friendly com- petition and relaxation during a hectic semester of studies. Last year marked Eta ' s twenty-ninth consecutive Derby Day. When many freshmen arrive on the Ole Miss campus in the fall, one big decision faces them- Rush. For many students, join- ing the greek system allows new friend- ships which last forever. Fraternities and sororities allow a family atmosphere for those students far from home. The greek system also works hard in raising money for different philanthropies and works with the Oxford community in projects such as tutoring young students. The greek system is a great place for a student to begin friendships even though the greek system has nothing to do with actually becoming an integral part of the Univer- sity. GREEKS 311
