A Tribute to Chancellor Porter L Fortune, Jr. To the Students: The year 1983-84 is particularly significant to me per- sonally, for it marks the end of my sixteen years as Chancellor of The University of Mississippi. During the time I have been privileged to serve as Chancellor, I have developed a deep and abiding love for Ole Miss. I hove found the University to be more than an institution that offers degrees in over 100 fields. It is a way of life - - an honorable center of learning a very special place. There is a spirit here which gets into your bones, which is felt but cannot adequately be ver- balized. It is the essence of the name Ole Miss. What makes Ole Miss distinctive? It is this exciting spirit of its people students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. It is its unique heritage. It is that inexplicable inspiration and quality that could spawn future William Faulkners, Eudora Weltys, Willie Morrises, Theora Hambletts, Ellen Douglases, Leontyne Prices, and D. B. Kings. It is that in- describable natural wonder we experience each Spring when God sends down to Oxford o little bit of Heaven, painting an incredibly gorgeous garden, which we proudly and affectionately call Ole Miss. Among the many students who have traversed the halls of the first lady of Mississippi institutions are generations of leaders in government, jurisprudence, business, science, literature, the arts, and athletics. You ore the beneficiaries of an incomparable legacy of in- spiration and achievement, of excellence that transcends the ordinary. It is with this memory and veneration that I pass the Chancellorship to my suc- cessor, confident that this great institution has a destiny of achievement far beyond our imagination and fondest dreams. I salute you as the finest students in the world and cherish your friendship as my proudest possession. Sincerely, Porter L. Fortune, Jr. Chancellor
