, (Nov. 15).... I8ve come to know how much I don ' t know, which is, after all, a good thing to know, which at first glance might look witty or original, but comes very close to being camp. At any rate, I have, until now, considered myself at least normally intelligent, in regard to the fact that I rate intelligence largely by literacy, What have you read? Who is the older brother of the BRothers Karamazov? What I am trying to say is that I have always felt myself to be above average as far as my range of reading is concerned, and though I still think I am above average I also consider myself JSf greatly lacking, almost approaching illiteracy. I don ' t know a damn lot more than I do know. I am sure that this will always be the case - at least it ' s true of everyone I ' ve met here so far, or any- where for that matter. But perhaps I can put a dent in that vast unknown. By the way - knocked out and too much, man are ' in ' right now. But in two weeks the sharp people will stop using them because they are being used too 188 often. Simultaneously they will look down their noses at anyone who does use these phrases (such use immediately labels the unfor- tunates as being unsharp) and also smoothly pick up a couple more. Two weeks ago it was ' together 1 and ' really nice 1 . There will be a splinter group, by the way, who will righteously keep using the perfectly good words ' to show that they are above fads and trends, but still the whole thing is con- trolled by ego. It ' s a big ego trip (that ' s in now, too), all of it. Sincere detachment is the way out or is that ' far out 1 ? at any rate I think I ' m going to do my term paper in English 102 The Significance of Speech Patterns at Ole Miss as Reflected in Dormitory and Fraternity B.S. It ' ll have charts and cycles and it ' ll be neat. Right Arm, Farm Out, etcete r a (with a hard ' c) - 19

(Oct. 23)... Classes have been going well, at least I think they have. I have done pretty well on al 1 of my tests so far. The bestt thing about Ole Miss that I ' ve seen so far is that you can get to know your professors, you ' re more than Just a seat assignment. Most of the tea- chers here are good, although I do have a couple of boring ones. I guess there will always be bad apples. Case in point (about getting to be friends): the other night, Friday, three other guys and I went over to my philosophy professors house and had dinner with him and his wife. The other three have had him in a couple of courses and naturally knew him better than I did, but I do have hi n for Intro- duction to Philosophy, I imagine that I learned more over at his house that night than I ' ve learned so far all semester. There is really an advantage as far as learning is concerned in beings friends with your teacher. 18

(Jan. 12) .. .I ' m sorry I haven ' t written sooner, but I ' ve been studying hard. Christmas was great and thanks for the money. You won|t believe it, but I Still have some left. I may not even be overdrawn this month. My studying is coming along pretty well, but I ' m scared of my finals next week. I ' ll be glad when they ' re over; that seems ages and ages from now. Everyone( almost everyone) stays up all night before their exams cramming after -taking a dex (a stim- ulant) to keep them awake. Don ' t worry though, I ' ve got something tetter to keep me awake. . .fear! ! 20
