Sledge Floyd Hirshel Abbott Claiming the honor and distinction of being the first Southern fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon traces its origins back to the University of Alabama, where on March 9, 1856 it was founded by a group of eight close confederates. Since that time it has grown to be the largest national college fraternity in the United States. SAE is noted for its fostering of the Interfraternity Council, as is shown by their establishment of the first national leadership headquarters building, Levere Memorial Temple at Evanston, Illinois. Gamma Chapter was established at Ole Miss in 1866 by L. Q. C. Lamar one of the greatest Southern statesmen. In their endeavors to live up to Lamar ' s standards, local SAE ' s try hard in scholarship and in extracurricular activities. SAE ' s are found in almost every phase of campus life, and also are outstanding when as alumni they enter the business or professional world. Their red brick chapter house, whose focal point is a long, white-columned veranda, is the scene of numerous parties, such as the spring formal, date suppers, a shipwreck, and the annual convict party. SAE ' s participate eagerly in these forms of entertainment, for a good social life is important to them. The symbols of the fraternity are the colors, purple and gold; their flower, the violet; the goddess Minerva, symbol of wisdom, and her faithful attendants, the lions. Not Pictured: Nelson Cauthen, Charles Conner, Dub Crum, Bob Deterly, Kenny Dill, C. W. Gary, Bill Gates, Tully Hall, Guy Harril, John James, Charlie McAlexander, Bill Sampson, John Storment, Sherman Swalm.
