J 9 . ALFRED B. BUTTS s.s., Ms., AM, PH.D., LL.s. Dr. Alfred B. Butts, Eleventh Chancellor of the University of Mississippi, assumed the Chancellorship on July 1, 1935. Prior to his coming to Ole Miss, he held the position of Vice-President and Professor of Government at Mississippi State College. Since 1911, when he became a member of the faculty at Mississippi State, Dr. Butts has given his ability, effort, and life to College and Univer- sity worlc. His educational activities have not been confined to Mississippi, for he has served on the faculties of the University of Texas, University of Virginia, University of California, Dulce University, and others. Although Dr. Butts is now serving his first year at Ole Miss, his sympathy with and understanding of all students, his loyal cooperation and utmost efforts pertaining to the spirit and progress of Ole Miss, his qualities as a man, have made him dear to the University. With such a man in the Chancellor's chair, Ole Miss is destined to make remarkable strides in her prog- ress toward the pinnacle of American Colleges and Universities. Page I9

Chancellor Emeritus Alfred Hume, Chancellor-Emeritus and now head of the llathematical De- partment of the University of lllississippi, has done much to make the Uni- versity one of the leading educational institutions of the South. It was through his incessant efforts and his sincere devotion to the University, that it now holds its position among the leading schools. DAVID HORACE BISHOP, M.A., LL.D. Vice-Chancellor David H. Bishop has served the L'niversity as Vice-Chancellor for many years. In the absence of the Chancellor, Dr. Bishop becomes the oflicial head of the institution. He is also the head of the English Department of the University and under his direction this division of the curriculum has become one of the outstanding units of the courses of study. The College of Liberal Arts of the Liniversity of Klississippi is the oldest studies. Preparatory courses are offered in lvledicine and Law. SCHOOL OF COMMERCE JAMES WARSAW BELL, B.A., P1-LD. Dean The purpose of this division of the University of lllississippi is to offer those requirements for the making of a business career. Since the establishment of this school in 1917, the highest of standards of school work have been maintained. The student must be sufficiently able and mature enough to do college work before entrance into this school is granted. Page 20
