It has ever been, and it is today, not so much a factory as it is a field, and not so much a field as it isa force. lt is not a place where machinery works with dead material, but rather a place where living beings are in process of growth and development, where mental and moral forces are moulding character and shaping destinies both of individuals and of states. It is confidently believed that the l'niversity is one of the state's greatest servants in building up and perpet- uating all that is really worth while. Its province is to lead rather than to follow, and to serve rather than to rule. But in order to serve best, it must be most free-- free to expand, to develop, to see visions, to breathe a clear, pure atmosphere, freed from the suffocating smoke of commericalism, and to live a life which, while in close and sympathetic touch with every interest of the state, is yet untouched by the mercenary spirit of the utilitarian extremist.
