rljlt T611 li r 5 Qirharh arinu itivauell l ltichard Marion Leavell. M. A.. L. L. D.. was horn in Newberry Dis- trict. S. C., August 31. 1838. At the age of two years. he came to Mississippi. settling in Pontotoc County. Here he attended the B. lt. VVehh Academy, entering the University of Mississippi in 1856. when Dr. F. A. B. Barnard was President of the institution. After three years of faithful study. Dr. Leavell graduated with hon- ors. and entered upon the profession of teaching. lt was not long. however. until his country called him. and in the month of April. 1861. with the rank of Lieutenant. he entered the Second Mississippi Infantry. After a year's service in the army of Northern Vir- ginia. he was elected Captain of his company. and held this Command until the battle of Gettysburg. when he was made prisoner and carried to Fort Delaware. thence to Johnson's Island. Ohio. During his imprison- ment here. Dr. Lcavell was a memher of a class of students of Law. taught hy General J. Z. George. Through the instrumentality of Dr. Barnard. his former college President. who. though a Northern man. was Dr. Leavell's staunch friend. he was liherated. l After returning to Mississippi. he opened an institution at Verona. T under the name of Verona Male Academy. where many men who have t since attained prominence. came under his ennohllng influence. ln 1871. he was elected to the State Legislature. where he became especially noted asa parhamentarlan. ln 1882. the Trustees of Mississippi College called him to the chair of linglish in that institution. where he remained until 1889. when he was elected to the chair of English and Belles-Lettres in his Alma Mater. The degree of satisfaction with which this duty was discharged. is attested hy the singular fact that the Board of Trustees adopted a special resolution of approval in his favor. Two years later. he hecame Professor of Phil- osophy and Political Economy in this institution. which chair he filled until the year 1908. Outside ol' strictly school affairs. Dr. Leavell has held various posi- l tions ol' prominence and trust in the State. He has served as President ofthe Mississippi State Teachers' Association. and has held many official positions in religions organizations. As a friend. he is sincere: asa teacher. he has no superior. and as a man. his character is nnnnpeachahle. Prohahly no personality in the State ol' Mississippi has touched more lives for good. and done more to further the great Brotherhood ol' Man. than the nohle and revered suhjeet ol' this sketeh. tii'eelt Ia-:nu-ll: Now, ,Q'0lIllt'IlIt'Il, the initplitons part of this proposition is r
