TO MY ALIVIA BIATER. 'Tis ages-yes, ages, for it seemeth so, Since thy walls gave shelter to me, And the whispering winds their lullabies low Sung to the silent trees, And sung because their hearts were filled With love for you and for me. I was a child, a thoughtless child, When first I came to thee, And wandered blindly here and there, 'Till I learned to love and to see, To love the priceless gifts thou hast, And gladly offered me. And the years passed swiftly, too swiftly by, While I labored and lived with thee, And the day rushed in with maddening haste That brought a summons for meg That brought a summons from a pitiless hand, And used its power on me. But the winds in the trees bring sweet memories Of all the dear days with thee, And the stars in the skies, heaven's own bright eyes, Are ever reminders to me Of the old precious days when, joyous with praise, I labored and worried for thee.
