The percentage of UMS graduates who in recent years have continued their education at college and university level has exceeded ninety per cent. In the area of character building we have an honor system based on the honor systems of such schools as the United States Military Academy at XVest Point and the Naval Academy at Annapolis. XVe have a strong honor system because our students want the honor system, and they uphold it, The following words, taken from the 1908 Cadet, are as true of our school now as then: . . it is not mere material progress that constitutes the pride and glory of our UMS. lt is rather the things that truly count in life - the high standards of character and scholar- ship without measuring up to which a student can not long remain among usg the afflatus of mind and soul, strengthened from year to year by our school traditionsg the strong school loyalty engendered by such a spirit . . . the remarkable records of our graduates both in college and after life - these are the achievements by which we are willing to be measured.

With Colonel Paul B. Robinson as the superintendent, we opened our new school building in the fall of 1956, our enrollment being 580 boys. In the opening of this new school building our alumni, patrons and friends saw a dream fulfilled-an enlarged, better equipped. and up-to-date school. By the fall of l959 our enrollment reached 746 boys. including 29 boys in the kindergarten. XY'ith the passing of each year changes in school personnel are inevitable. In July 1959 UMS yielded its superintendent, Colonel Robinson, to Marion Military Institute of Marion, Alabama. where he took up his new duties as president of the school. Colonel Thomas C. Huckabee became the superintendent of our school and Colonel R. E. Hanks became the assistant superintendent. Our school continues to give to scholarship and character the emphasis which Mr. XVright gave to them. Science. mathematics, languages, history - these subjects are emphasized in our curriculum.
