M. S. Cadets opened the 1953 season with a 20-6 victory over Bay Minette. Ollie Byrd tallied twice and Sidney Phillips once as the Cadets marched over the Bald- win County eleven. I FOLEY The Cadets, playing their first game of the season at Ladd Stadium, crushed Foley High 28-O. Hugh Brinkley opened the Cadet scoring in the tirst quarter, and Ollie Byrd followed with one each in the second and third quarters. Walter Cody closed the scoring as he drove over in the fourth quarter. McGlLL U. M. S. won its first intra-city contest and its third straight game with a convincing 20-12 win over McGill's Yellow Jackets. Ollie Byrd and Marion Bryars did the honors for the Cadets, Ollie scoring twice. VIGOR The Cadets followed their first city win with another as they romped over Vigor 25-O. Lee Jacobs, Ollie Byrd, and George Ward were the offensive stars in the Cadets' fourth straight win. Byrd again scored twice, running his TD total to eight. PARRISH The undefeated Cadets won their fifth straight game of the season as the Parrish High team of Selma went down before the Cadet firepower. George Ward was the offensive star, scoring twice. Ollie Byrd tallied once, and Clifton Inge added the final score. The Cadet defense really stood out as the Selma club failed to score a first down, even though the U. M. S. reserves played the last half. NYSA! M4 ,N N .. , .. pq if SQ Q 1 h .mr , x ,k usual 1 7 Q , V, 'MMQM ,Qi QM K w i pq I ggi ...f 'K I JK GREENVILLE The U. M. S. The gates opened in the final half, and the Cadets went down. The U. M. S. offensive was plagued by fumbling the ball ten times. Final score: Murphy 56-U. M. S. O. The Second Annual Homecoming was held on October 8 and 9. More than 300 partons of the school, alumni and wives, friends and students, attended. Members of the faculty and staff were in a receiving line to greet the guests as they arrived. The mothers of several students helped to serve refreshments. The Homecoming Queen, Marilyn Whigham, and her court, Mary LaMont, Mary Del- champs, Terry Raue, and Sandra Townsend were introduced to the arriving guests. The celebration was a complete success, and the following night the Cadets romped over the McGill Yellow Jackets, 20-'l2, to end the Homecoming festivities in a most con- vincing fashion. E'- ALUMNI! Rob Leafherbury Dexter Corte, Barrie Haiman Jack Stevenson -141- I I V53 I N SCHOOL SPIRIT School spirit is something that can be more accurately described than defined. lt is a feeling-an intangible "something"-that inspires one to do his best in any school activity, whether he is a spectator or a participant. Because of its spirit, U. M. S. has, through the years, been able to compete on even terms with schools having larger stu- dent bodies. When the student body of a school has the proper spirit, they can accomplish won- ders in all their activities. Athletic teams would be worth little were it not for the support of the student body. Since only a comparatively small group can become mem- bers of the different teams, it is up to the rest of the students to back this group at all times. A team may be physically stronger and a pre-game favorite because of its past record, but unless that team and the student body have that "all for one and one for all" spirit, they lack the will to win. The ioy of victory and the disappointment in defeat should always be shared equally. The attitude of all should be one of "We won" or "We lost." However, school spirit should not end with the game, but should be carried into the classroom, by cooperating with the instructors, and onto the parade ground, by cheer- fully obeying the company officers. Company pride, esprit de corps, makes for a bet- ter company and a better battalion because it creates keener competition. So to you who have the privilege of remaining at U. M. S. another year, and to you who will someday fill their places, let this be an inspiration to close ranks and work together next year, and every year thereafter, for the good of our school and the high ideals on which it was founded. Believe in yourself and in your school. Get behind all its activities, giving each of them your very best, and you will have that feeling-that intangible "something"-called SCHOOL SPIRIT. C. E. E.
