HAGGERTY George, playing, his first season on the Farsity, covered himself with glory. He is fast as a streak and shoots accurately from any position. Illness kept him out of the late season games. RICE " Bill " played center when Ely was injured and for- ward when Haggerty was on the sick list. He did both in a commendable fashion. half leading the lowans 10-9. In the second half the Iowa defense tightened and through the foul shooting of Funk, the Hawkeyes forged into a one point lead which they held till the timer ' s gun put a stop to hostilities. Michigan was relegated to third position in the Conference ratings. After the season closed, Howard Birks, star guard for two seasons, was elected captain of the 1923 team. TENNIS Winning eight of the eleven matches played, Michigan ' s tennis team enjoyed one of the most successful seasons since the net game became a Varsity sport at Ann Arbor. Weather conditions were unfavorable for an early start but as soon as the courts were in shape the team began to show promise of exceptional form. The eastern trip, in which the Wolverines met and defeated some of the best tennis players of the country, was decidedly pleasing. In five matches played, Michigan won all of her games by a decisive score Pittsburg, Carnegie Tech, Pennsylvania, Lehigh, and Cornell were pkyed. The Lehigh and Pennsylvania contests, although con- sidered as Michigan victories, were not completed as rain put an end to play before the matches could be run off. Michigan, however, was leading by a comfortable margin in both cases when the con- tests ended. At the Conference meet both Captain Merkel and Reindel in singles reached the semi-finals round of play before they were elimi- nated. In the doubles matches Michigan also made a very credit- able showing. The three defeats suffered by the Wolverine squad came at the hands of Chicago, University of Southern California, and Oklahoma. The latter two schools possessed combinations of unquestionable strength and were probably the strongest in the country. The team of 1922 was composed of Captain Merkel, Reindel, Rorick, and ' Sanchez. Reindel is the only man lost by graduation. The other letter men, together with a strong freshman squad, will form the nucleus of the 1923 team. Although the entire team played good tennis at all times, the clever placing of shots by R eindel and the slashing game of Captain Merkel are especially of note. CAPTAIN MERKEL RORICK SANCHEZ REINDEL MERKEL, CAPTAIN
