ADVOCATES TOASTMASTERS John W. Ester. . . ...... President Fred Smith .... . . .Vice President Jon Birge . . . . . . Treasurer Dan Kolb . . . . . Secretary John Ester , President fleft to rlghtj SEATED: I. Birge, F. Smith, I. Ester, D. Kolb. FIRST ROW: T. Wittlinger, W. Conner, D. Telleen, A. Flank, I. Monson, D. Ebershoff, P. Nicely, D. Wilton. SECOND ROW: W. Clark, J. Boskey, C. Tibbits, R. Michaelson, I. Walker, K. Spangler, D. Shaw. Though formerly a constituent of Toastmasters International, the Advocates this year decided to declare autonomy, which has served them well. Their weekly meetings take place over lunch in the Faculty Dining Room every Tuesday. The membership of twenty-three includes both master and tyro, but all take turns at the rostrum. The audience tries the mettle of its orators with challenging assignments: the improptu speech is the supreme test, from which only the nimble wit and agile tounge emerge unscathed. Advocates takes very seriously its task of turning each member into a more than competent public speaker, but it believes, just as firmly, in having a good time at it. Adepts are called to t grand, exalted office of Toastmaster, a position of temporary b absolute omnipotence. Two of the present members are Busine Administration students who cross Tappan each week and no dou fuel the repartee. Once a term, there is a dinner at which select young wom may be present on invitation. The Advocates' prospectus is elementalg talking, done wel is not only an entertaining diversion but also lays up against bright future in a loquacious profession.

PSURFS The Senior leaned into his turn at the bottom ofthe stairs and almost collided with the Freshman staring intently at a poster. He heard the youngster asking, Who are the Psurfs? He felt for a cigarette and lit it. The Ann Arbor Surboard Riding and Mountain Climbing Society he replied deliberately. What do they do? the Freshman earnestly persisted. Sing, shrugged the Senior. Is that all? said the Freshman sceptically. Well, mused the Senior, they throw intimate privateparties- but they'd rather entertain at other peop1es'. Should I ask, ventured the Freshman, if they ever ride surf- boards or climb mountains ? Now what do you think? returned the Senior sagely. Cleft to rightj: jim Sprowl, J. Hoffa, C. Cohen, D.
