LAWYERS CLUB BOARD OF DIRECTORS Every spring the Law Club, of which every student is a member, elects thirteen directors to the Board. The Board is responsible for all student extra-curricular activities save Law Review and the Case Club Program. Under the Board arethe QUAD, RES GESTAE, inter- mural athletics, social events, a speakers program, and the student book exchange. The Board is a constituent member of the American Student Bar Association and sends representatives to its meetings. But in addition to all this, and in apparent conflict with its energetic promotion of social life, the Board administers disci- pline for Law Quad residents. Mike Mathews, President Michael S. BARRISTERS SOCIETY John H. Blish ....... ..... L ord Chancellor C. Douglas Kranwinkle .... Master of the Rolls Anthony J. Lynch. . Chancellor of the Exchequer Helinan Brook .................... Bailiff John Blish, Chancellor An honorary which emphasizes diversity and scholarship, and takes itself with whimsical levity, Barristers has been doing good turns since 1904. Sometime in the 20's the group originated its annual Grease Ball. There is a scholarship awarded each year to a deserving student, and the University enjoys the Barristers' services as ushers at Centennial Celebra- tions. Occasionally the Society decides to publish an issue of the RAW REVIEW, always oversubscribed. The twenty-five members of the Barristers gather bi-weekly, if it can be arranged, in order to further their vari- gated designs. Each spring ten jimiors are initiated and these tap fifteen classmates the following fall. Once service is paid its due, Barristers unabashedly promotes conviviality, though it always maintains a decorum befitting a body so venerable. fleft to rightj FIRST ROW: T. Croft, G. Schoonmaker, H. Terrence L. Croft, Presiding Judge THE CASE CLUBS The freshman's first introduction to the courtroom most likely occurs when he prepares and argues a Case Club appellate brief. This activity is voluntary but at the same time it offers important experience not available in the classroom-and consequently most freshmen participate. This year 370 joined the Case Clubs. Participants prepare one appellate brief from an authentic trial record each term and make their arguments before a court of upperclass judges. Each counsel's work is graded on the quality of his research, analysis of issues, and oral and written presentation. During the first term, the Clubs instruct members in the techniques of legal research, brief writing and oral argument to prepare them for the program. Each of the sixteen clubs is headed by a senior judge with a junior clerk assisting him. The most successful ad- vocates at the year's end are chosen for advancement into the Campbell Competition. From among those selected for Campbell come the junior clerks for the following year. fleft to righrj SEATED: B. Croft, T. Croft, J. Gates. STANDING: T. Wittlinger, C. Barr, F. Pollock, D.
