g ving the Planet Environmental awareness, continued to be a national concern this year. These efforts to save the planet were echoed on campus by members of Earth Alert, Who partici- pated in a number of events ,and activities aimed at promoting envi- ronmental concern and activism. We exist to promote education and awareness of the environment on campus and to encourage activism among students toward protecting the environment, said Keely McCarthy, co-president of the organization, Outlets for these concerns were numerous and included campus and beach clean-ups, petition drives, letter Writing campaigns, and recycling efforts. All the recycling ialuminum, glass, plastic, cardboard, newspaper and White paperl on campus is a result of Earth Alert efforts, McCarthy said. There is plenty more that could be done, but it's a long, hard fight. We work actively on campus and in the commu- nity, McCarthy said. We r abetter tomorrow use national issues applied locally. Members worked to save the arboretum on cam- pus. University officials proposed sacrificing the property, located behind the J ames Knight Physics Build- ing, for additional parking spaces. But its survival became conditional for pas- sage of the University Masn ter Plan by the Coral Gables City Commission. Supposedly we saved the arboretum, but if you. walk over there, they are always tearing it up, McCarthy said, referring to the unkempt nature of the area. Earth Alert was also active in lowering boating speed limits on Biscayne Bay in an effort to save the de- clining manatee population. An additional Earth Alert project was completion of the Campus Environmen- tal Audit. The audit, pre- pared by members, was essentiallya state of the university report With proposed solutions to solid waste, recycling, energy, water and pesticide use and transportation.
