Research In Biology Blood agar plates and blood cultures are being made by Frank Koontz for the giowth and study of organism isolated fi-om the or- gans and tissues of normal and diseased in- dividuals. The purpose of this research is to devise a scheme to differentiate between the genera of bacteria isolated from normal and diseased tissues. These particular bac- teria are quite similar in their physiological and biochemical activities and thus are often incorrectly identified. The results of the blood agar plates and blood cultures will show whether the organism is capable ot hemolysing red blood cells and which type of hemolysis will be produced. This informa- tion will then aid in the identification of bacteria. BLOOD IS TRANSFERRED trom a test tube to plates. PARASITE LARVAE animal. injected into an e.xperiniental HEATED AGAR is being added to test plates.

WORKMEN HURRY to complete new Centreville on time. Expansion, Registration Students returned to Maryland this fall to find a larger campus. The construction of another dining hall, in addition to Cam- bridge, Chestertown, Bel Air, and eight- story Centreville, forms the new quadrangle which lies in the northern suburbs of the campus. Other expansion includes the con- struction and renovation of the wings adja- cent to Taliaferro Hall. During registration, a record 15,502 and 14,256 graduates and un- dergraduates enrolled in classes in College Park first and second semesters respectively. A canopy erected over the rear library en- trance shielded students from the elements. CONSTRUCTION completes the new quadrangle, first of its kind on campus -: - - — ' .
