Traditionally, this six weeks has been regarded as a time to measure progress made by individual stu! dents. If evaluated satisfactorily, each iunior was allowed to flute her caps and continue with the nurs' ing program. The Ceremony no longer marks the end of a pro- bationary period. Instead, it has evolved into a night of celebration as the Seniors extend their friendship and a warm welcome to the Juniors. After an evening of skits, songs, and laughter, the event concludes with fluting of the Junior caps and pinning ofa silver bar tor the men in the class. The more things change the more I am the same. It appears that my life is a constant irony of maturity and regression, but my sense of progress is based on the illusion that things out thereare going to remain the same and that, at last, I have gained a little Control. But there will never be means to ends, only means. And I am means. Our faculty had mannerisms and characteristic words that are ingrained forever in our integrative subsystem. They all tried so hard to 'zero-in' on the Nursing Process, Community Nursing and Crisis Intervention. Did they succeed? Only time will tell! Sally always 'shared' with us while Janet was 'in touch' and 'aware' of everything. While Barbara 'addressed' them, Francine got us through many 'sticky situations' with the aid of Harry Stack Sulli- van. Judi, Pat and Norma did such a good job with the role plays, they'll be auditioning for the Morris Mechanic Theatre next year. Donna, our 'boss,' was always 'trying to get it together' Peggy admitted she couldn't spell, we cut a 'time pie' with Trish, but Kathy 'pieced' it all together in the end. Be sure to keep a close eye on the clock when headed for Jo's classes. Now that it's over - Thank You, Faculty for guid- ing us towards June 2 and our BSN. We won't forget this year or you!! It was designed by Florence Nightingale for those nurses who graduated from St. Thomas' Nursing School in England. One of those graduates, Louisa Parsons, opened the University of Maryland School of Nursing and the cap and tradition was carried to America. The origi- nal cap was made of one row of point d'esprit lace which was gathered together and fluted. The cap we receive has been modernized, includ- ing additional rows of lace and the nurses' initials embossed on the crown. Stringing at the University of Maryland School of Nursing is a traditional ceremony involving the processes of: stringing a long piece of thread through the fluted edges of the cap, drawing the edges together, and fitting the cap to the head of the individual. IQ 3"",1..' M! 1 Nursing airit no bed of roses I6 64 Your Friend the Pancreas by Alan Gaby Many people do not realize what a true friend the pancreas is. When your blood contains too much sugar, your pancreas comes tothe rescue with insulin. When there is not enough sugar in your blood, that little piece of sweet bread provides you with glucagon. Long after Alka Seltzer ushered in the era of civilized man, that little organ with a head and a tail was plopeplop, fizz-fizzing amylase, lipase, peptidases, and other digestive enzymes into your gut to help you utilize the bolus of food with which men's stomachs had been perennially stuffed. While people have, for ages, been making great demands on the pancreas, this little endocrine entity has stood like a flying buttress against the chapel of pythonic engorgement. Then came a new insult to our biochemical buddy: the scourge of recent evolution, the pure, refined, white powder resembling heroin so much in its appearance and addictive properties that historians have been puzz- led by its legality, the crystal carbohydrate that has contributed so to the decay of our society that the brand name under which it was sold was named after the Domino Theory. So you're addicted to sucrose, you've got the sugar blues. Your friend with the happy hormones cannot han- dle your addiction. You down your sugar and this purified powder rushes into your system like a drop of ink would equilibrate in a glass of water. Your blood sugar level is then grossly elevated, and your body in crisis. Your poor, unmutated pancreas panics at the sight of this new event: the rapid rise in blood sugar. It does the only thing it knows how under the circumstances, it POURS insulin into your blood to get rid of this excess sugar. But unfortunately, it pours in too much insulin. Next thing you know your blood sugar is too low, rather than too high. Your brain is not getting enough fuel, you are hungry, nervous, sweating, depressed, and irrita- ble. And you crave the one item that you know will most rapidly bring your blood sugar back to normal and relieve you of your misery: the white powdery stuff. The vicious cycle moves on. Your poor friend the pancreas is overworked and uncared for. lt will not be your friend forever. L My dear friends of the class of '78, In the two years I have been associated with the school of Nursing, in both a full time and part-time capac- ity, I can honestly say that I have enjoyed your company. Although I won't be graduating with you, I can't help but feel a sense of loyalty and love toward all of you. Unfortunately, it has not been my pleasure to have met every one in the class, therefore my message may mean more to some than to others. Nevertheless I congrat- ulate all of you and wish you much happiness. For those of you who laughed with me, cried with me, and in general "shared" your lives with me these past two years, a special THANK YOU is in order. Never in my entire life have I loved or been loved as much as in these past two years. You are special people and whatever you decide to do after graduationg whether it be in the Health Profession, the field of entertainment, or whether you decide to be a truck driver, domestic engineer or a farmer, my heart will be with you always.
