Our school was founded in 1889 by Miss Louisa Parsons, who was a student of Florence Nightingale at St. Thomas Hospital in London, England. When Miss Parsons was preparing to come to this country, Miss Nightingale gave her a pattern of a cap and point d'es- pirt lace, and the privilege of bestowing it upon the nurses of the first school of nursing of which she was to become the Superintendent of Nurses. By that fortunate privilege, the University of Maryland School of Nursing inherited the Nightingale cap. During Miss Parsons' administration, this cap was worn by both students and grad- uates. Each nurse was required to make, launder and flute her own cap. In 1900, Mrs. Kathryn Taylor became Superintendent of Nurses, and she, considering the long hours and arduous work the nurses were required to do, designed a simpler and less elaborate cap of organdy and ruching for the student nurses. Although not entirely similar, the Nightingale cap has been patterned after the cap of St. Thomas Hospital and the point d'esprit lace is still procured from Eng- land. There have been little changes made in the patterng however, the style of wearing has been altered , no doubt due to changes in hair style . The first caps were worn farther back upon the head. The caps are made with the crown and the double rows of fluting threaded to adjust to the individual head . The graduates of the University of Maryland School of Nursing respect and honor the tradition of their beautiful and unique, fluted point d'esprit cap. fReprint from the 1955 Bulletin of Nurses Alumni Associationj : .11 X' .L.ng.aL.-4.4.4 , ' .r....il--" ia... The original design, submitted by Tifany's in New York, is in the form of a St. George's cross which includes the '-University of Maryland colors of black, gold and maroon. The caduceus design in the center of the cross depicts a iserpent representing wisdom entwined around a chalice symbolizing "the wise presiding over decoctions of medi- r:cine" . The pin bore the inscription "Nurses' Alumni Association, University of Maryland." In 1970 the Association offered its historic pin to the School of Nursing as an official emblem. In accordance with Qrthis action, in recent months the lettering of the pin has been changed to read School of Nursing, University of gfMary1and. The basic design of the pin remains the same.
