'Q - X I ve' ' 'A ' 4 , 4 v Rzdmg cz Bus I wouldn t call riding buses one of the things that delights me but from an acquaintance of many years I think I ve developed a sort of attachment to them Ever since I can te member Ive been riding these vehicles because Mother liked to go out and yet she couldn t drive thus when Dad wasn t home away we d go on a bus From these years of riding buses I ve come to the con clusion that each has its own individual personality deter mined by its appearance the driver and the passengers on it I always feel happier when I get on a clean bus that is decorated cheerfully than I do when I am on one that looks as if it s been the battle ground for a waste paper throwing war The driver who has a cheerful outlook on life brings a pleasant and contented feeling to the passengers But the determining factor of the bus s personality is the people who ride in it Every morning on the way to school I see business people who are usually in a hurry to get downtown Durmg that time of day this transportation seems to take on a busi ness like attitude and go as fast as the law will allow The people get off in a way that resembles a herd of horses all after the same lump of sugar which in this case is the door In the evening the bus settles down to a slower pace as if it were satisfied with the work it had done during the day and was planning to enjoy the rest of its run I think I like to ride best in the evening when darkness covers up the defects of the scenery and the street lights and neon signs add a bit of glamour to the route E B Whlte got a picture of life as he looked down into eople s homes from the El likewise a bus give you a etter opportunity to see life as it is closer to the real people I ll never forget that one night as I was coming home we happened to stop right across from an apartment building One apartment on the ground floor was particularly notice able because there were no curtains at the windows and the shades were up emitting a strong light There was a young couple in the apartment who from the ladder and the paint cans in the living room seemed to be in the process of paint ing but at that moment the girl was sitting on the boy s lap with her arms around him that is until she looked up and saw all the eyes from the bus focused on them Immediately she leaped up and ran out of the room leaving the laughing boy to pull the shades down I m sure all who saw this scene felt as I did the humor and warmth of it and experienced a happy feeling as a result Ive found there s a certain amount of mystery about every person who enters this vehicle which starts you won dering what kind of person she is Sometimes you see a pitiful thing as the time a woman entered the bus that I was on with three little children all of whom were poorly dressed The woman carried a worn cardboard suitcase She asked the driver what bus would take her out of the city she didn t care where just away from Detroit Whenever I think of her I always feel rather sad and find myself wonder ing what ever happened to her Riding buses does more than getting you from one place to another it gives you a true picture of human nature DOROTHY SILK Twewla Grade Symbols The young college girl rested quietly on her bunk one dim light stood across the room on her desk and the room was quiet except for the soft hum of violin strings coming from the Mantovani record being played on the radio The blonde freshman sighed as she looked about on one wall stood her high school graduation picture and above it hung her high school pennant How well she knew the people on that old picture she had grown up knowing them She re called the football games the parties the final exams and the high school dances at which she had been constantly surrounded by these familiar faces She breathed heavily as she gazed at the old pennant she remembered how often it had been strung up on the aerial of the old convertible after the big games and how many times it had been en thusiastically waved in the auditorium during the pre game pep rallies Slowly she continued to gaze about the room There on her bureau towering above a stack of homework papers and school books stood her tarnished tennis trophies The tall silver one with the figure of a racquet and ball on the top reminded her of the day she won the high school championship Above her desk tested a framed photograph of the old football team she remembered the boys she went with and wondered if she would ever see any of them again A stack of dusty piano music was piled on the Hoor among the music were some of her favorite tunes songs which more She leaned over on her bunk and reached for the old shoe box Her eyes reddened as she removed the cover and grasped the plaid Bob Lo hat Terry had given her on the moonlight cruise the crowd had taken just before gradu ation At the bottom of the box were stacks of Voices her high school newspapers she thumbed through each one yet knowmg almost every article by heart She recalled the hours she spent writing her class news and the features she had labored over trying to incite class enthusiasm and unity and spirit Her dusty Kzngjames Bzble was filled with pressed gardenias and carnations flowers she had once proudly worn to the school proms flowers which were now yellow and stiff with age The liltmg music on the radio reminded her of her graduation dance that dance represented the end of a carefree happiness which she would never be able to re capture For a brief moment she gazed at her class ring a symbol of four of the happiest years of her life She never played the oldGlenn Miller records any more she no longer wrote her class news and she would never again dance t1l midnight with the varsity team Her life was different now It was one filled with homework lectures worry and above all homesickness She turned over on her hard mattress put out a dying cigarette and from her reddened face fell the tears of a past remembered ANNE GETZ Twewb Grade I I , I ' , . . 7 , ' - . . . y I . . , 5 . , ' Y , ' - . . Two soldiers were stand- ing at attention to guard the entrance to the town. They said I might go in, but I would first have to eat twenty pounds of cream of wheat to become a member. After I had finished eating, I could hardly move, but the soldiers just grinned at me and said, "Congratulations, member of the Fool's Para- dise!" and they opened the gate as I marched into the town. I met a very nice old man who invited me to his house to meet his family. This house was built a few feet under the ground so we entered it through the chimney. We didn't have to walk through the rooms because the chairs moved when we pushed on a little knob The bedroom looked very strange but beautiful The beds were hanging from the ceil ing and the pillows and sheets were constantly flying around the ed We had a delicious dinner but nobody had to cook it be cause we just had to whistle for whatever we vx ished to come flying through the air The children didn t have to go to school because they were already smart enough when they were young There aren t any cars or bicycles in Fool s Para dise there are only pigs and donkeys on which you ride or fly The trees grow all year long and in the spring there is candy instead of blossoms on the branches The only sick ness in the town is Corponsus which causes people to walk on their hands but only a few have it One day I had a strange feeling as 1fI were being pulled toward the ground but I didn t give it too much thought Guess what happened to me the next day? I got this terrible disease Corponsus and in order to cure myself I had to leave Fool s Paradise RENATE SCHMIDT Ezghtb Grade x7 fm X' XZ' Eigbiuw f-1.4 'suv-.un LN94 sum?
