NEIL SCHIMKE As the medical student attacks the seemingly overwhelming task of incor- porating the great volume of medical knowledge and experience into an integral part of his being, he naturally migrates to those few and very outstanding educators who have the talent to uwinnow the wheat from the chaff and to prepare it in easily digestible form for the tender stomachs . .,.', f0slerj of l the students. On rare occasions such as this, we, the senior medical students, have an opportunity to thank one of those amazing individuals who has stood far above the rest as "the faculty member who has shown the greatest devotion to his primary duty as teacher of medical students." The 1970 graduating class proudly announces that the 197 0 Jayhawker, M.D. Teaching Award goes to Robert Neil Schimke, M.D. Dr. Schimke, who hails originally from Leavenworth, Kansas, graduated from the University of Kansas in 1957, after which he spent one year as a Fulbright Scholar in Bonn, Germany. He entered the Kansas University medical school class of 1958, and, after completing a folu' month pre-doctoral fellowship at Jackson Memorial Laboratory for Medical Genetics at Barr Harbor, Maine, he graduated with the class of 1962. Dr. Schimke then completed his internship at KUMC before going on to Johns Hopkins for two years' medicine fellowship with geneticist Victor McKussick, M.D. He completed his medical residency at KUMC in 1967, rounding out his year by winning the coveted Jayhawker, M.D. Resident Teaching Award from the 1967 graduating class. Dr. Schimke then joined the teaching staff at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where he has continued to excel as clinician, teacher, and researcher. Many are the students who have benefitted from his teachings in clinic, on the wards, and in the a . Deepest respect and thanks to Dr. Schimke from the 1970 graduating class. Dr. Schimke is captlued here in the many faces which characterize his teaching: PEN SIVE PAST AWARDS 1952 1953 1954 1954 1955 1956 1957 1958 1959 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964 1965 1966 1967 1968 1969 William P. How I wished I could palaver With my rancid old cadaver, Though heid been dissected into heaps of creeping human hash. Suddenly I heard a dripping, Through the doorway blindly tripping, In he slithered, and he fell into the bathtub with a crash. On my notes he threw a finger, And his chuckle seemed to linger Like the oily fumes which filled my chamber like green sewer gas. The two years spent in clinical training provide medical students the opportunity to formulate personal ideals and sound medical judgment based on their relationships with a variety of staff physicians and visiting professors. The traditional didactic orientation of this aspect of the student's education is balanced by one that is equally important and stimulating-the teaching of techniques 'required for good patient care. It is primarily from members of the house staff that this vital element of sound medical training is derived. We at the University of Kansas are fortunate to be able to work alongside a number of residents who, despite the burdens of lengthy self-education, heavy workloads and extensive patient care, somehow find the tireless interest to share their knowledge, time and friendship with us. Their willingness and ability to teach make the clinical rotations not only invaluable from a strict educational standpoint but also place them among those experiences most fondly remembered by their students. Many of the house staff fulfill this role most capablyg few, however, are extraordinary in this capacity. The class of 1970 is proud to honor two such members of the house staff as recipients of the Resident Teaching Award: Ronald L. Stephens, MD., third year medicine resident and Melvin D. Roberts, MD, fourth year orthopedic surgery resident. Each of these physicians displays the warm personal manner, unseljish interest in dedicated teaching, and dynamic approach to their profession that exemplzjies excellence as a pattern for those who are to follow. The class of 1970 wishes to extend its deepest appreciation and sincere best wishes for the future to each of these superb physicians. It is to them that we should be thankful-for the encouraging words given us as we scurried to make our 9:00 AM beds, shuffle off to our daily report on "someone's" patients, teaching us the proper methods in disposing of bed pans and contents and instilling in us interest in one another's adventures. l It is these "good nursingi' qualities we will remember and cherish, which in time-if time permits us and report is not too long-we shall pick up ancillary nursing care aids that enable us to help fellow human beings as-that we understand their needs and their wants-that we understand the meaning of their illness, both to them and their physician-that we are able to offer aid aside from that which is scratched down on endless reams of paper-that we are able to think and then act,-that our decisions are based on knowledge, both exogenous and endegenous-and finally, that we ourselves become humanized, endowed with understanding, oriented to patient care-not merelySSt21b1iShiHg 21 decorative surrounding, and most of all, that we make patient care more than a term preached-but too difficult to reach. Yea, these are the qualties so well exemplified by our 2B f'chief"-who so well fulfills, even to this day, the standards and practices of Florence Nightengale who said so admirably, "Call an aide to do this." In time we will come back and burn the deadrubble and give the bureaucracy a spring cleaning. P. S. " What ever happened to Niederbaumer?" V VY.
