THE STCJRY CF A HAWK One day in June of I948, SUl's Herky was haiched by carioonisi' Dick Spencer, a faculiy member and graduaie of 'ihe Sfafe Universiiy of lowa. Spencer had received a hurry up memo ask- ing for a versafile symbol 'For ihe black and gold spiri+ of 'rhe Hawkeyes. Herky receiv-ed his name af+er a sfafewide confesf in July of I948, and Dick Spencer him- self admiH'ed, By fhe 'lime homecoming rolled around, Herky was in! Adepi' al' any spor+ or campus ac+ivi1'y, lowa's humorous and aciive hawk plays fhe same role as Wisconsin's badger or Minneso+a's gopher. Bu'r he seems +o assume more expressive anima- 'rion in his own enfhusiasfic manner. The I'-750 HAWKEYE brings you Herky in his momenfs as a campus wheel, moun+aineer, or perhaps a wary graduaiing senior. Whaiever his role, he's definifely been acclaimed ihe B.H.U.C. -Big Hawk On Campus.
