ILLINOIS OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT Spring, 1949 •1 To the Students of the Unlveralty of Illlnole: Through the courtesy of The Illlo it le Bfrp.in my Dleasure to send preetlnge to all Illlnl. This year, with a slight decrease In student en- rollment and with our building program underway, a return to more normal conditions of campus life can be expected. The peak of the emergency has passed and we can afford to concentrate upon long-range planning, without neglecting immediate needs. That our students, too, are looking forward is shown by the continued Increase in graduate enrollment. This is good evidence of their belief In the future. It is encouraging to find this clear-vlaloned willing- ness to invest In education. Today the hope of a world at peace, yet divided and anxious, rests on its young men and women - the national and international leaders of the years ahead. Most of the veterans, serving their country in war and returning late to student life, have made the most of their opoortunltles. They go out from the campus doubly endowed with knowledge and maturity. To younger students increasingly a facilities and servlceo of our re t In pcendlng two years at Gslesburg or Navy dents must face their first year at Urb an extremely large Junior class.
