A long fly that went for a double, an error, a base on balls, and two singles allowed the Alabama collegians to score three times. Illinois tied the score in the fifth inning. A single by Paul, a wallc to Sweeney, a one-base hit by Finn, a sacrifice fly by Dorn, and George I-Ioffman's first hit of the trip enabled the Illini to score again in the ninth, but a double play closed the game. The following day, Coach Carl Lundgren used I3 players in an effort to subdue the Alabama nine, but Illinois was on the small end of a 9 to 2 score when the game ended. Moving over to Auburn, the Illini fared no better and were downed by the Auburn Polytechnic sluggers, 12 to 5. Desmond and MclVlurtrie took the punishment in this game. Illinois defeated Auburn in the second game of the series, by staging a three-run rally in the ninth inning. The score was 11 to 9. That victory ended the Illinois trip into the Southland because it rained the next day at Lex- ington and the final game with the University of Kentucky was can- celled. THE :mo or 1929 fs, Dnhlbeck I M 1 V I X I 9 F... MICHIGAN sg ILLINOIS o a , '1' y? Shaw Victories over Purdue and Iowa PENING the conference season against Purdue, after playing a 10 to 10 tie two days before with the Bradley Polytechnic boys, the Illini emerged victorious with a 4 to 3 verdict. Bud Stewart, pitching before a hostile crowd of Hoosiers, allowed the Boilermakers only six hits and after the second inning held them scoreless. Purdue scored twice in the first inning on two singles and a triple, and once in the second on a single and an error. Ernie Dorn drove in two runs in the fourth inning and Sweeney tied the score the following inning when he scored Hoffman on a hit. Dick Finn broke the tie and gave Illinois a one-run victory by slamming out a triple in the ninth with Norm Radford on base. I The best Iowa could do against Don Andrews in the second conference encounter for Illinois was to get four singles and one run. Three one- base blows were hunched in the seventh for the small end of a 6-1 score. Pinlcey Bryden scored two runs for the Illini in the third by bagging a double with the bases full, and Earl Paul's triple a moment later with two on, scored another pair. Two more runs later seeped across the plate. p ,av f -I ,gg X A .,,1 HOFFMAN SINGLES TO CENTER Andrews f.2-VBA PAGE 252
