HE Spirit of Illinois! What is the spirit that animates campus life and activities? The University exists to make better men and women, physically, intellectually, and morally. I am sympathetic with extra-curricular activities, not because they are activities or a necessary adjunct of University life, but because of my belief that they contribute to the development of character through loyalty, cooperation, disci- pline, forbearance, sacrifice, honesty, integrity, and unsellish leadership. If they did not, there would be small reason for their existence. But after all, these are mere contributory factorsg the primary reason for the University's existence is to furnish university education for boys and girls of the State. So, while these other things are helpful, the principal thing for which you are here is to secure an education. Scholarship comes first when speaking of the spirit of Illinois! x I f -i g f f is - ' I , K rf' - is 1 , ., Page 21

T HAS been pointed out that the aim of our University education is realized through two sources: scholarship and association of campus life with its activities. Because we believe it to be the part which most needs preservation in the memories of the students, we have chosen to dedicate our book to the latter phaseg but we are not insensible to the dominating part of our education, and we hope that our representation of the men behind the University, who have devoted their lives to the cause of education, will recall for you the memories, both pleasant and otherwise, which will serve to better remind you of their lasting influence.
