SEASON The T959 season of the University High Trojan Football Squad was a season of extremes. It saw the Trojans turn-in some truly great performances, while on the other hand it also saw some moments of frustration take its toll . Many stars were crowned from the team. Among these were several all-district players. Some of the Trojans went so far as to win Super Centex honors, and one Trojan made all-state. Those selected for the District 9AAA first team were fullback Alton McNew, guard Pat Smithson, and end Johnny Dolezel . Those on the second team were center Tommy Swanner, and halfback David Granger. Fullback Alton Mc New received all-state honors. The UHS Trojans opened their season against Ennis at Municipal Stadium in Waco. On the first drive started by the Trojans Alton Mc New scored, drawing first blood.

The sports section of this annual is dedicated to the coaches of University High School. Without the effort put forth by these dedicated men the athletic teams of University High would be obscure. It is with great pride that the students of University High say thank you for a job well done.

Bill Koch runs for a touchdown after receiving a pass from Rex Whitaker. The action is taking place against Nederland. The next week University traveled to Nacadoches to encounter Nacadoches High. This game was lost by the Trojans 55-6. The only UHS score came on a 76 yard punt return by David Granger. For the third consecutive week the Trojans traveled out of town for their game. This time they encountered the Cnrsicana Tigers. Striking three times A 1 the first half for scores, the Trojans held off the Tigers in the last half to wedge outa Zi-I4 victory. The Ennis Lions struck back on a long kickoff return that set up the first Ennis score. After that the Lions were caged for the night, because University claimed the victory 33-6. This started the Trojans off on the right foot, because the T959 season proved to be a winning one. The second game played by the Trojans was also played on the turf of Municipal Stadium. This game was against the Weatherford Kangaroos. In this game University rolled to a 35-O victory over the Kangaroos. High lights of the game were two touchdowns scored by halfback David Granger and a spectacular touch- down pass from quarterback DeWayne Hale to end Johnny Dolezel. For the third game of the season the UHS Squad traveled to Nederland to play the Nederland Bulldogs. This game tested the Trojans since the Bulldogs were ranked as the number two team in the state at the time. University lost this tussle in the last quarter by a score of 21-28. There were many spectacular moments in the game. Among these were Bill Koch's fine catch for a Trojan score, and David Granger's 97 yard kickoff return.
