EDUCATIOh FOOTBALL For the third year in a row, the Univees missed a hid for a perfect season by only one game. The lone defeat came at the hands of Indianapolis Wood 2-0. A tougher schedule this year provided many- close games, but the Univees finished the season with eight victories, including wins over Plainfield. Culver Military Academy, Salem, and Mitchell. P. T. Buntin and Tom Teter were voted on the All- State team to climax a great season. Teter was the team ' s leading scorer with 52 points. Next year ' s team will have only four starters from this year ' s team, hut an undefeated reserve team, and a good freshman team should bolster the Univees ' front line. Under the direction of Don Luft, they compiled a 12-9 record wh ich included wins over powerful Culver Military Academy and rivals Ellets- ville and Smithville. Luft lost his highest returning scorer in senior Bernie Brown, who was injured in football prac- tice. Seniors Dick Skirvin, Tom Teter, and Jim Topolgus will be missing next year but four starters will return. These four will be guard, and leading scorer, Wayne Wit- mer, guard John Ivans, forward John Hartman, and cen- ter Bill Weigel. Steve Wenning, the other returning let- terman, and some promising talent from Walt Gray ' s re- serve team will also be fighting for a starting berth. 38 39 VARSITY UHS 52 61 57 81 69 60 56 61 72 71 57 68 62 68 64 68 67 64 OPP. 75 71 67 .. 54 Plainfield Charleton Culver Military Acad Elletsville 33 55 54 .......66 Oolitic .65 Monrovia Mooresville 47 37 52 77 57 . . 71 ... 59 Paoli ..... 82 . .... 67 SECTIONAL . ..46 . ... .... 62 Elletsville 68 RESERVE FRESHMEN UHS 28 30 47 29 44 43 28 36 42 46 30 33 27 42 34 35 40 53 UHS 35 19 19 25 35 19 40 33 37 OPP. ....35 ....71 ....32 Bloomington Edinburg Helmsburg Orleans 35 Plainfield Charleton 23 Culver 35 Elletsville — — 26 Sacred Heart — 66 Oolitic 22 Monrovia Mooresville Indpls. Coach Walt Gray ' s reserve team fin- ished the season with an 11-7 record. High points of the season were wins over rival Elletsville and always power- ful Center Grove. Ray Gibson led the scorers, and will be fighting for varsity berths next year as will the rest of this year ' s good reserve team. The freshman team did not fare so well under the stiff " cross-town " com- petition, but managed to do fairly well in the city tourney at the season ' s end. The members of the team got a year of valuable experience which will benefit them on next year ' s reserve team. The only loss to this year ' s team will be senior Doug Dixon. Returning for next year ' s team will be Ray Webb, Bill Peterson, Jim Everetts, Jerry Barrett, Ron Pennington, John Young, Dave Hagen, Dave Alley, Bob Trobaugh, Bill Dickens, and Bob Dro. John Young and Ray Webb won first place in the Sectionals, Jim Barrett and Dave Hagen won second, Doug Dixon won third, and Bob Dro and Bill Peterson won fourth. With all of this returning talent, U.H.S. is looking forward to a fine wrestling team next year. The season ' s only defeat came at the hands of highly touted Bedford. Much of the success can be attributed to two sophomore pitchers, John Dyer and John Young, each of whom pitched no-hitters during the year. But su- perb fielding and good hitting balanced the Univee attack. Only outfielder Steve Young, who was the leading hitter, and pitcher-first baseman Dick Skirvin are lost from this year ' s squad, so next year ' s team will have an abundance of vet- erans. Second roiv — Allan Irwin, Ansy Hazelrigg, Coach Jerry Mcintosh. The Univee Cross Country Squad compiled a winning rec- ord and gave many underclassmen a year of valuable ex- perience. With Coach Jerry Mcintosh at the helm and most valuable runner Bob Conard setting the pace, the Univees had a four-three season and placed sixth in a field of eleven runners at the Southport Invitational and seventh of eighteen in the sectional. Hopes for next year ' s squad are bright. Allen Marshall, Bob Barrow, Dave Thom- as, Steve Wenning, and Andy Hazelrigg will be returning next year. All of these runners have, had a good bit of experience, so Coach Mcintosh and University School can look with anticipation to the 1961 cross country season. U.H.S. - - 25 30 U.H.S 27 .28 24 U.H.S. The bulk of the squad was composed of underclassmen with only two seniors, Bob Conard and Shaun Byrnes. One of the most promising young trackmen was Bill Rhodes, a hurdler. Junior Eric Smith, the year ' s most valuable runner, will be returning for extensive sprint work and broad jumping. In the dis- tance events half miler Dave Thomas and miler Allen Marshall will be back. For the shot put, Jim Everitts and Steve Burhans will be back. With all of this returning talent, the hopes of a successful track squad for next year are high. 45 After a slow start, the tennis team bounced back to show great improvement during the sea- son. The high point of the season was the victory in the Columbus tourney. After the loss of three four-year veterans last year, the tennis hopes were down. But backed by Tim Lemon, Barrett Patton, Roger Patton, and Mike Burke, the team broke even for the season. Chuck Milisen and Mike Burke are the only team members who won ' t be back next year, so the returning men should provide a wealth of experience. However, the season was a bit ironical. Early in the year U.H.S. defeated Crawfordsville in a four-way tournament, but later in a dual meet, the results were reversed. The same thing happened in meets with Bedford. In the Sectionals U.H.S. placed fourth, being defeated by North, Bosse, and Reitz of Evansville, and Bedford. In the State Meet U.H.S. placed thirteenth and defeated North and Bosse. Also, the day preceding the State Meet, the U.H.S. linksmen defeated State Champion Washington of Indianapolis in a nine hole meet, 172-185. After a 12-3 regular season, U.H.S. can look forward to another fine golf squad next year. 1961 Golf Squad: Sandy Briggs, Steve Scherer, Terry Lawson, Bill Weigel, Coach Walt Gray, Jon Estes, Billy Rech- ardson, Jim Rush.
