Coach Richard Kampmann VARSITY CROSS COUNTRY FIRST IN LEAGUE - THIRD IN CITY The University Varsity Cross Country team, thanks to the excellence of both Coach Dick Kampmann and top runner, Bob Branch, finished a vic- torious season by placing third in the all-city Championships. Considered by Coach Kampmann to be one of the finest teams in the history of the school, this year's Harriers demolished all dual meet foes, captured the league meet with an incredible twenty points, won their division in the city semi-finals, and finally placed third in city. The team was also fortunate in that it didn't have any injuries until the final meet of the season. For the tenth straight year the Warriors have succeeded in remaining undefeated in dual meet competition. Top runner this year was Bob Branch, who placed first in league and then went on to take second in the all-city finals, barely losing to a runner he had beaten the preceding week. Other varsity per- formers were Bob Reeder, lsecond in leaguel, Bob Miller lthird in leaguel, Lenny Levine lsixth in leaguel and Charles Beitzel. The j.V. team were dual meet champions on the U.C.L.A. course, but were halted on the tough Pierce College course, and had to settle for third in league. Top runners of the j.V. squad were Tony Purcell, Doug Hooten, and Mike Mills. Showing a great deal of determination in the final meets, the tenth grade team had an exceptional season. Although they lost the dual meet title, they won the league meet and went on to take sixth in city. Top runners of the tenth grade squad were Steve Springer, jim Alexander and Wes Butcane.
