We know you've been waiting, Anticipating just to hear us say Tahitians is our name, By this we claim our fame. After three short years We have to say good-bye But the name Tahitians Will live on at Unihi. So our song says so long To all our Warrior friends Good-bye to dear old Uni, Tahitians' stay must end. For the past year the assiduous CHIEF- TAIN staff, under the guidance of Mr. Robert Freyer, has been industriously planning the annual. The staff under the direction of the associate editors-Gretchen Mueller, judy Goldsmith, and jay Kholos-has incorporated many new ideas concerning organization, lay- outs, and write-ups. The CHIEFTAIN art staff, under the direc- tion of Miss Catherine Chow, has inaugurated many new ideas, including the use of line drawing and paper sculpture on the division pages. Under the guidance of Mr. joe Hess- lein, the photographic staff caught the many action shots used in this CHIEFTAIN. CHIEFTAIN STAFF L. Treiman, G. Lehman, l. Roof, Mr. R. Freyer, C. Potter, P. During the fall semester under the supervision of Mr. l-larold Wingard and the editorship of jeff Matsen, many new columns, features, and contests were added to the paperg and the staff won first place in the Los Angeles City College Page Make-Up Con- test. During the spring semester under the leadership of Leslie Wickland, Editor-in-Chief, and Tom Weinberg, Managing Editor, an im- portant step was taken. The school purchased a Pony lvliehle Press so the WARRIOR could be printed in the Reservation's print shop, un- der the direction of Mr. Arthur Thomas. Led by Leslie Wickland, the WARRIOR Staff also experimented with a school maga- zine, which made its first bow this year. WARRlOR STAFF Fottom row: N. Winter, l. Pine, B. NishinagaI ACTIVITIES ENCGURAGE ACHIEVEMENT A record number of extra-curricular activities have been offered to the braves and squaws of the reservation this year. Warriors have had the opportunity to join a wide variety of clubs offer- ing service, debate, language, sports, science, and competitive events. These organizations promote sportsmanship, fun, and rec- reation for their members. The Kandahars, Uni's ski club, enjoyed a full season under the sponsorship of Mr. Robert Keech. Three trips to Mammoth and the annual party provided the members with plenty of snow and fun. All tenth graders at Uni had the opportunity to serve their school through membership in the Wakiyas. Under the guidance of Mr. Louis Cohen, this organization has continued to be a great asset to the school. Uni's lower division Drama Club, the Dionysians, has opened the dramatic field to all Warriors. With Mrs. Edythe Alberts to direct them, the Dionysians present plays at lunch time for the student body, and have frequent theater parties. Barbara Franklin DIONYSIANS ,if W5 Bottom row: S. The next week Banning was trounced l3-O. ln the Milk Bowl Game with Westchester, the Warriors piled up 36 points and remained unscored upon. Venice became the first to score on the Warrior machine, but still lost 20-6. Hamilton and Marshall followed, managing to score l3 points against the Warriors' 33. ln the last game of the season, the Warriors were tied with Fairfax for top spot. ln the final week of league play Uni played Hollywood, and rival Hamilton clashed with Fairfax. The Warriors tied the Sheiks, I9-l9, but Hamilton upset the Colonials, leaving Uni as League Champs. Even with a history of fifty-seven straight wins, all by wide margins, the Pursellmen were not resting on their laurels. On the varsity roster were the names of four who had sped to times under 9:30. All the other squads were equal in depth and speed. The league season came and went and the War- riors, as is their custom, romped over all the Western League could provide. The league run-offs on UCLA,s l.S-mile course saw the Pursellmen snuffing out their nearest competition by twenty points in the varsity, and sweeping all other divisions by equally wide margins. ln city, the layvee Harriers romped past all compe- tition by twenty-seven points. The hurdles were the Warriors' biggest problem, until Uni's high- jumper, john Gaustad, demonstrated that he could run the highs and lows in l5.4 and l9.9 respectively. The Manual Arts meet, long believed a preview of city competition, brought a heavily favored Manual squad to the Uni cinderpath. History repeated itself, the contest depended on the relay, as it had the previous year. The Toilers took the meet by a narrow margin. Nonetheless, the depth of the Cindermen proved too much for the Western League. The League Finals, held at Uni for the first time, saw Uni wallop its nearest League rival, 60-36, for the League title. VARSlTY TRACK Bottom row: M. Golde, H. Uller, E. Wyckoff, R. Brown, D. Platis, D, Lightfoo NETMEN BOUNCE INTO LEAGUE This year's net squad, according to Coach Marvin, boasts un- usual depth and strength in both singles and doubles. ln their four practice tilts, the Braves met with Santa Monica twice, win- ning one, 4-3, and tying the other, 4-4. After tying a strong Beverly Hills squad, 4-4, the netmen went on to wallop Venice, 6-l, ln their two League starts, the netters demolished Washing- ton, 7-O, and rolled over Huntington Park, 5-Z. FINMEN PLUNGE FOR LEAGUE TITLE The Warriors, having one of the top swim teams in the city, have yet to meet their toughest opponent in League and City, Hollywood, the last loop tilt of the season. Pacing the Finmen to their numerous victories are such out- standing swimmers as Pete Dubin, recording the top city time of 24.4 in the titty-yard free-style. Mike Henry leads all City tank- men with a time of 56.2 in the lOO-yard tree-style. The most exciting meet of the season so far was the practice tilt with Eagle Rock. The Anismen, imitating the Track team, chased a powerful Eagle Rock squad down to the relay, trailing by three points. The lead changed hands several times, but the Warriors came through, winning the relay by a reach, and the contest, 45-37. B SWIM TEAM Bottom row: A. Smith, F, Schiff, D. Goshert, E. Baumgarten, D.
