As the spring semester started, Dave Stein took over the helm as Council President and has started to reassemble the I-li-Y program. By developing a I-li-Y Executive Board and a I-li-Y-Tri-Y Council, advisor Taylor Lewis and Dave hope to build the "Y" to a successful zenith. Footballers, lniury-Riddled, Losses of key players through injuries accounted for the main handicap for this year's team. The early season loss of Gordon Smith, Bruce Loder, Art Phil- lips, lim Schuler and joel Mattsson upset the apple cart considerably. ln the first game of the season Uni played against the strong Banning Pilots. Brilliant running on the part of lim Schuler climaxed the Warrior drive as he broke away to score the Braves' first touchdown of the season. Armand DeWeese, Sam jones, and San- der Legreid were the ironmen on the line. Not only did they play most of this game, but they played 60 minute ball for the entire campaign. The powerful Pilots won i3-7, as Dick Garcia, their l55 pound speedster, ran the winning touchdown. Narbonne, the Warriors' opponent in the tradi- tional lVlilk Bowl game, turned out to be what the Braves wanted, a victory. lim Schuler didn't waste any time for this cause, as he grabbed the opening kickoff and ran lO5 yards for the longest return of the year. FOOTBALL Arnie Sherman, Uni's kicker de- luxe, at the Dorsey game turned in another of his fine perform- ances by averaging 45 yards a punt for seven tries. The Braves in the meantime were on the re- ceiving end of a l3-O defeat. When Arnie isnit kicking, he is usually teaming up with Gor- don Smith and lack Webb at quarterback. Others seen in the backfield slots were Bob Bor- roughs, jim Schuler, Marvin Cotton and Bob Sambrano, half- backsg Art Phillips and Floyd Mc- Kinsey, the driving fullbacks. "For the first time in the his- tory of the school. Uni had its entire first-string backfield out before game time," stated Coach Wilcox. This game ended with Uni trail- ing l5-O, and was a "be proud of" performance for an injured squad. The only league win was over the Hamilton Yankees. Showing a spurt of the old drive, the War- riors took the ball in the first series of downs and marched to pay dirt in six plays. Uni coasted in for a 7-O win. Fairfax ended the Braves' schedule this year, with the game being rated a tossup. Playing an important part in it was the wind, which hampered the perform- ances of both teams. Going into the last two minutes of play the Braves were ahead 6-O and looked unstoppable. Then suddenly Fair- fax hit the jackpot by scoring a touchdown and ran over that im- portant extra point for the win. Contributing performances by lim George, halfbackg George Walters, tackleg and Steve Gerts- man, fullback, helped the War- rior cause. Armand DeWeese, team captain, ended the season by being placed on the first string All-League team and second string All-City squad. l-lis bril- liant play at left guard made him well deserving of these awards. Harriers Show Speed Starting in l95l with a handful of eager harriers, Coach Pursell produced three stellar preformers in Al Collins, Dale Brooks, and Bob Hunt. That year the team won the League championship and finished the season with a fourth place showing in the All-City finals. This year Coach Pursell formed the squad around the nucleus of returning letter- men that included Bill Graham, Don McNamara, Dick Crouch, Walter "Butch" Ma- gill, and football refugee joel Mattsson. Championship strength soon was apparent as new-comers Howard lvloench, Bill Fulton, Allen Neelley, Bill Williams, and Ben Wada added some impressive times for the l.9 mie course. ln the Western League finals, Bill Graham topped the league, while Don McNa- mara's fifth place was the highlight of the varsity meet.
