“4 Opening Abraham Baldwin was the University ' s first president. A native of Connecticut, a graduate of Yale and a teacher there, a lawyer and a minister, Baldwin moved to Georgia after serving as a chaplain in the revolutionary army. During his service in the state legislature he probably assisted in gaining the original land grant for a college in 1784, and the next year he wrote the charter for the University of Georgia. He served on the Board of Trustees and helped decide on the location of the university. By the time the college was ready to open in 1 801 Baldwin was busy in national politics, so he turned the presidency over to his friend Josiah Meigs, also from Yale. ”
