The Department of Rec- lamation, Conservation, and Economy program at the University of Florida entered its second year of activity as one of the most repr'e- sentative symbols of college government cooperation in the war effort. lnitial aims! of the organ- ization--to reclaim valuable materials needed by the government and to conserve and economize other such materials--were carried out to a great extent. At the beginning of the school year, different posts in the department were filled and the organization got underway to carry out its aims and purposes. Thousands of pounds of metal of every kind needed were collected and sold to dealers. Until the waste paper market closed, the University regularly sent truckload after truckload of collected paper to the mar- ket. lnformation vital to the conservation of heat, hot water, and electricity was distributed throughout dor- mitories, fraternity houses, and rooming houses. A statewide attempt to install similar organizations in every college and university in Florida was made, and other efforts to make the Florida student body war- conscious were carried out. A unique plan to use the money derived from the sale of waste materials, con- ceived last year and fol- lowed all during the current year, was that every penny taken in was used to buy War Bonds in the name of the Tolbert Memorial Loan Fund to aid worthy students. Thus the government was aided in its program of col- lecting badly-needed prod- ucts, the sale of War Bonds was stimulated, and the students of the University of Florida were directly aid- ed by the enlargement of the loan fund. To date, S450 has been donated by the DRCE. These worthwhile efforts have made the Depart- ment of Reclamation, Con- servation, and Economy a representative part of the University of Florida stu- dents' war effort.
