aresiify oottlbtallll The pre-season outlook for the team was p1'omising. Graduation losses had been light, and the nucleus of the team was augmented by a likely group of freshmen, eligible for varsity competition through a voiding of the existing regulation. Changes had to be made in the coaching staff: Earl Svenson, All-American from Minnesota, replaced George Van Bibber who had entered the Navyg Roy Guyer was recalled from retirement to take over as assistant line coachg Charlies Horvath and Captain Lewis helped Coach Cristie with the backs, and Don White was put in charge of the Jayvees. The Huskies slipped out of their class in their first encounter with Maryland, whose T-formation, aerial superiority and potential All-Americans led them to a 34--0 victory over the battling Huskies. Unveiling a terrific blast of scoring power, the team opened their home season by smothering Massa- chusetts State 28-0. The scoring attack featured a touchdown pass from Scussel to Walt Dropo, a Jorgensen conversion, 'floltin' Joe Perko's push over the line, and a brilliant bit of running by Nlohr. A scrappy Wesleyan team upset the favored blue and white to the tune of 20-7 before a Dad's Day turnout of -I-,000 people. The Wesmen capitalized on a fiuke pass decision and a couple of penalties to return home victorious. In the Maine game, the Huskies overran the Golden Bears by a score of 26-7. Perfect timing, good blocking, and brilliant passing off-set Maine's stubbornness, but it was felt by many that a higher score could have been made. A lively struggle with the Springfield Indians ended with a 21-14 victory for the Huskies as Scussel's broken field running. a pass from Arnsten to Jorgensen, and a reverse by Revilli sparked the Connecticut offense. Maikkula and Cuddy were outstanding on the defensive. The Huskies outclassed Middlebury completely by rolling up a 32-0 score. ln the third play from the opening whistle, Scussel scooted 67 yards for pay dirt. ln the second half the Christianmen overcame Middlebury's early resistance by scoring four touchdowns. Olmstead's and Molloy's tackles were out- standing. ln the big game of the year, the superior U-Conn Huskies subdued the Rhody Rams 13-6. A forty yard drive, climaxed by a fifteen yard pass from Arnsten to Scussel for a touchdown highlighted the action in the first quarter. Dwyer brought the score to six-all in the third quarter by a sensational ninety-five yard run for the Rams on an interception. The tension of the fourth period was relieved by Scussel's second touchdown of the day on an off-tackle run and .lorgensen's conversion. A
