That's right, according to such varied and frequently vocuous sources as columnist Bob Greene, the pro- gramming directors at ABC-TV, ilLife Magazine, and the ever-perceptive Romones, Boulder's uninhibited inhabitants are as cool as Suzy Chopstick and twice as cute. You can't even buy Coors ot Faber, much less boycott it. And where else can you get engraved coke spoons while- u-woit? Right next to the autographed Ralph Steodmon t-shirts, noturolly. Listen, we're so hip, our montros hove montros, we whip up beef bourgogne with organic and generic ingredients, and the Rolling Stones ploy encores before anyone applauds. We'd rother listen to Devo than disco, our apartments are solor- heated, and backgammon is second only to hollucinogenics on boring Tuesday nights. Funky, but always chic. Yes, it's definitely 0 social advantage to Be Boulder. Everyone else in the country envisions the town as the Disneyland of the Rockies. Why else would you be here to read this? When you mention Colorado to o tenement funster from o swamp reclomotion site in New Jersey, immediate images of charming ski chalets, quaint little shops, and o choirlift in every backyard are conjured. Listen, anything beats stickboll and Bruce Springsteen. Carry on the some conversation with o Loguno Beach bikini-body in her final semester as a sun appreciation major, and all she can dream comes true-dozens of bronzed downhill rocers, permanent sunshine, and not one Iowrider in sight. Besides, isn't the drinking age decriminolized or something? Paradise by the disco lights. I hate to mention it, but Aspen is four hours from campus. Boulder actually looks more like Carson City thon Camelot, 3.2 beer couses permanent adolescence, and the only thing more numerous than tourists are Texons. There's still 0 mystique, but the locals know it's a mistake, only they don't find out until it's too late to exchange their Rolling Stone subscription again. So they make the best of it, buy enough denim and flannel to costume o Deadhead reunion tcloss of '691, and settle into a split-level on Moorheod. Funny how they didn't mention the smog, the traffic, and the wind in the brochure. Fooled you. The hype is merely a ruse to lure your non- resident tuition into the CU coffers, to fund such necessities as o Frisbee golf course, the Trivia Bowl, and Chuck Foirbonks.
