LIFE AT C. U. Came September and students answered the call of the classroom. To Boulder, pictur- esquely located on the feet of a mountain range, center of Colorado ' s largest institution of higher learning, came approximately four thousand students. An expected enrollment decrease was counterbalanced by a record freshman class. Students looked forward to a normal year of football, formals, and finals. Underneath the surface, however, could be seen the grim reality as the University entered its first full war year. A call, even louder than knowledge, had been sounded. It was a call to arms and many familiar faces had answered it. The effect was noticeable not only in this way, but in many others. About five hundred of the school ' s male population had enlisted in one of the reserves. The navy radio school was increasing in importance and the Japanese language school was be- ginning to accustom students to a previously unknown tongue. Registering students also found that many regular courses had been curtailed because the professors had gone to war and that many new defense courses had been added. Uniforms dotted the campus, and the war shared time with the prospects of the football team which was twice daily innoculating itself with the Yeager system in preparation for the coming season. lU
