In the two indoor meets that preceded the regular season, the team made a creditable showing in both the relays and individual events. The first two outdoor meets were dual contests with Clayton and McKin- ley. These schools were easily defeated in both junior and senior divisions. On April 4, Coach Schemmer's boys nosed out Independence, Missouri, by seven points for U. City's sixth consecutive State Indoor Title. Weakened by the loss of Ioe Horan, who pulled a muscle in practice, the squad won mainly through the fine work of Kenneth Leutwiler, who set an indoor 60-yard hurdle mark with the relay team. In the Maplewood Relays the following week Ioe Finch led the attack with his new record in the 120 yard high hurdles and the Indians came through for their sixth Maplewood Relay Championship St Louis U High and Normandy formed the opposition in the next meet which U City won by a large score Chester Schaums century and 220 yard dashes were the outstanding performances of the day The week end of April 24 the mile and two mile team which had been victorious at Maplewood went to the Drake Relays in Des Moines Against STATE INDOOR CHAMPIONS Page Sci nty T H E ' f Srlmniillky. Kent Farley, as Mr. Thompson, the coach for several years, was needed for full-time coaching at the lunior High School, The l935 team closed its County season with victories over Wellston and Webster Groves, and close defeats by St. Charles, Kirkwood, Ritenour and Normandy. This was the fourth season for Torn McConnell behind the bat and Charles Gilles at shortstop. This year found the following lettermen lost through graduation: Bahr Gilles, Goldman, Kirsch, McConnell, Sheiber and Williams. Blades, Whitson, Huey and Pollock, though in school, were ineligible because of local rules The lettermen who reported from last season were Brewer, Chapman, Grace Duchen, Ienkins, Knot and Lewis, while Deutsch and Shakofsky returned from the l934 season. Up to the present time our 1936 County schedule has resulted in one defeat and two victories. Webster Groves defeated us 2 to l in an extra- inning game. Good work in the field was lost through our weakness at bat. Wellston was defeated 9 to 3 with our batting showing great improvement. A home run by Ienkins helped score four of the runs. Against Ritenour Deutsch pitched a one-hit game. A home run by Kaufman started the scor- ing with the final result 6 to l. Our practice game schedule against City League teams was very sat- isfactory and helpful. Kirkwood, St. Charles, Normandy, and Clayton are yet to be played. ll ll. Bat-un. Fulbright. Kaufman. The ballet and tap chorus were chosen from the ad- vanced dancing classes. Metz. Culbertson. Williams Woas lark. Stern, Stem Hcllerud, Anderson, Mmzie, Lynoll, Frelirh The tap ensemble presented two very lively dances, one a wooden shoe Dutch dance and the other an eccentric number, both of which were well applauded. The ballet executed two lovely waltzes, one of which impressed the mel- o y "Sweethearts" more deeply upon minds of the audience. The play radiates a delightful romance of quaint charm and genuine interest. On the wings of a fated wind heralding a Spanish thunderstorm, an adventurous hat which sails boldly through an open window and lands at the feet of a "Romantic Young Lady" becomes the spool around which the thread of the plot Winds itself. Rosario, who is indeed romantic and imaginative as the title suggests, demands more out of life than she has pre- viously enjoyed. In the form of the "Apparition" following the disturbing hat, Rosario meets her long desired romance, and in a tangle of black hair and cuff links, complications ensue. bs, Cunnvr, Edward-, Xfillcr, Phiambuli-, Simon, Harpster, Cawanagh, Julian, Mohler, Niannc I 9 3 6 Page Eighty-five Band OFFICERS BARNARD BUSER Pres1der1t PHILIP SMITH Vtce Pres1dent LORRAINE SWYERS Secretary Treasurer ROBERT RIEDELL BERT ROSEN Plccolo Bob Stdo Flute George Fleselman Iohn Hoffman Clarmets B1lly Carrrnchael Howard Cook Herbert Prlnster Max Barken Alexandrta Hoevel Elltot Staudte Ruth Obermeyer George Heldbreder Iune Walsh MOTTIS Stevenson Robert Inge Earl Karm Bob Schoenthaler Alto Saxophone Andy Andreae Vester Thompson Albert Kaltwasser Bob Cory Page Ezghtu xx Ltbrartan Property Manager MEMBERS Drum Mayor Wallace Andrews Tenor Saxophone Blll lack Barttone Saxophone Trumpet Robert Rtedell Blll Pelsue Ieanne Heuser Lorrcune Swyers Kalman Bernstetn Itm Hall Francts Edwards Marvtn Andrews Sheartn Weber Harvey Kopman French Horns Lynd Hamrml Mtldred Anderson Mellophone W1l1xam Schoenebeck Henry Muckerman Pantone Stanley Malley Ted Horowttz BARNARD BUSER PHILIP SMITH LORRAINE SWYERS IIM HALL EMMONS DORN Euphonlum Bert Rosen Trombone Carl Vaden Emmons Dorn Edward Monteath Tuba Barnard Buser Phthp Srmth Rtchard Cavanagh George Gtessmg Davld Heller Bass Vtolln Dorothy Salzer Bass Drum Al Balm Cymbals Iohn Pluambolrs Snare Drums Howard Gardener Ilm Orwtg Aaron Landau Tympam Betty Dunahugh E Oboe- Ed Beare H .
