SIONEV LEVENE. Pr«id»M of l» e Cl « at Medical Cw«cf. CERTER THE Medical Center now covers twenty acres. During the past fifty years it has de- veloped from what a few great men believed to be an almost incredible dream into one of the world's greatest teaching centers in the field of medicine and allied professions. Now, as for the future, Medical Center is under- going vast and expansive changes. In the next two years a new teaching hospital, medical sciences building, clinic expansion, new intern and nurses' quarters and a student union will get the movement under way with a bang. The hospital as planned will contain fourteen stories. With the medical sciences building, the first year medicine will be transferred to this campus in the fall of 1954. Students, fac- ulty and graduates, it is estimated will number 2,700 this year and in 1970 they will total 4,000. Obviously, Medical Center is growing fast—both in size and prestige. So, really, the story has just begun.

- ALEXANDER OMYTROW of tht ASUCMC mEDICRL I IN THE San Francisco hills, north of Golden Gate park is the University Medical Center. One of the leaders in the field of medical education, the college was begun in 1862 as Toland Medical School and became affiliated with the University in 1873. The school now includes all phases of medical science—col- leges of pharmacy, dentistry, and nursing, in addition to the Medical School. Student ac- tivities are a very integral part of the center. One of the most notable students activities was the construction of a cafeteria and sup- ply store in 1921 -22. The credit for this goes to the dental students who raised the money and donated the labor to construct the chicken coop. Student activities today are stimulated by Cal Club and the recently formed ASUCMC (Associated Students. University of California Medical Center) which was organized by the Cal Club on the campus in 1947. It has been striving for the students in the various colleges on campus to get better acquainted with each other in order to have an integrated rather than a fac- tional student body.
