LICK A GIFT of James Lick, pioneer California businessman and landholder, Lick Observa- tory on Mount Hamilton, California, has been a leader in its field since 1888. Its fa- cilities are used for astronomical research by graduate students and scientists from universities throughout the world. When the observatory was built it fulfilled Lick’s provision that it should contain the most powerful telescope in the world. During intervening years larger and more powerful telescopes have been built at other obser- vatories. By legislative action on a bill signed by Governor Warren on March 13. 1946, Lick will again resume its place as one of the best equipped observatories in the world. SCRIPPS THE Scripps Institution of Oceanography at La Jolla is unique among the campuses of the University. In research and educa- tion they are concerned solely with the oceans—their physics, geology, chemistry, and biology. The one hundred and seventy- seven acre campus looks, to the passerby, like a small collection of buildings hanging out over the water. There are three major buildings, many smaller ones, and a small ship in which the many activities of the campus are carried on. About forty gradu- ate students are currently enrolled at the Institution, where they are working toward advance degrees in oceanography.

HRSTIIIGS WITH an illustrous past, Hastings School of Law can now look forward to an even greater future. When a recent State Legislature passed an appropriation for a new building, greater accomplish- ments were made possible. Hastings Sixty-Five Club constitutes a faculty of experienced and renowned teachers due to the policy of hiring professors retired by schools having stringent sixty- five retiral laws. In addition to studying under such authorities. Hastings stu- dents are afforded practical experience by the Legal Aid Clinic of San Francisco. The school has the largest enrollment of any western law school. FII1E ARTS FINE Arts reflects the spirit of San Fran- cisco in attracting people from all over the globe. The register includes men and women from Europe, the Near East, the Far East and the Americas from Chile to Alaska. This well equipped cultural cen- ter is built into a wooded slope of Rus- sian Hill to form twelve levels separated by patios and surrounded by spacious grounds. Established in 1874, the school is one of the older art centers in the nation and is the oldest in the West. Throughout its development it has kept pace with the contemporary interests, Today its courses are designed to en- courage individual insight into present conditions of art activity.

SflllTR BARBARA ■ THE Santa Barbara campus of the University of California is unique at the present time in that it has three campuses. The old State Col- lege campus on the Riviera overlooking Santa Barbara is but a scant 13 acres. The Mesa campus is on the ocean and was to be the new site of the college until last year when a new campus was obtained seven miles west of Santa Barbara and also on the ocean. This is the Goleta Mesa campus which contains 400 acres of land. Students at the college are looking forward to the move when the cam- pus will become one of the most outstanding of the University. A schematic drawing of the long range master plan development of this campus was recently released for public view. The plan provides for considerable flexibility and for possible future expansion. Santa Barbara is fast becoming a highly spe- cialized liberal arts college offering under- graduates work. Although a lot of teachers are still turned out, the college is getting away from the old State College days. Santa Barbara has a more or less special advantage in being a part of the large and overwhelm- ing University of California while being small enough for the professors to know the stu- dents and the students to know each other.
