m e e t i n g s THE year 1949-50 was outstanding for its Univer- sity Meetings. Leading statesmen, writers, and intellectuals blessed the University with their pres- ence and contributed to the knowledge gathering process through University Meetings. These meet- ings were attended by more than capacity crowds in contrast to many of the past. During the fall term Carl Sandburg delivered an inspiring speech, amusing the student body with a few of his many songs. Later, Pandit Nehru spoke on the situation of India in the world conflict. The spring semester was started off with Dean Atcheson's delivery of a major policy speech concerning the position of the United States in the cold war with Russia. The semester was further livened by a series of meet- ings on the loyalty oath in an attempt to present both sides of the story to the student body and public. Tall, dork and handsome, his career as an atonnus is as distin- guished as his outstanding undergraduate years. THE California Alumni Association, con- sisting of thirty-six thousand members, is the largest in the v orld. It is also one of the most active. Among its many serv- ices are the scholarships awarded to freshmen and the California Monthly. A survey of student needs was recently completed by the Association at a cost of thirty thousand dollars. It is published in book form and should prove invaluable in developing facilities for students. A summer camp has been established at Pinecrest, providing a second vacation spot for University men and women.
