PRESIDEnrS RECEPTIOn In the usual mtnrer President and Mrs. Sprcul eitend a perseaal jreetin9 to each new student. PRESIDENT and Mrs. Sproul once again played the role of hosts to the new- comers to Cal at the beginning of the 1949-1950 school year. Welcome to Cal’’ was the theme of the reception which was held in Hearst gymnasium. Wearing name tags and, in many cases, bewildered expressions, the new students were met by faculty members who introduced them to the receiv- ing line where our jovial president, gracious Mrs. Sproul, Danny Coelho and Edith McEwing, president and vice-president, respectively, of the ASUC greeted them. Cal's new members were then passed on to a lesser but more active group of greeters comprised of leading senior classmen. Under soft lights young freshmen and other students from this and many other states, and from many other parts of the world as well, met and mingled together for the first time. There was dancing to the strains of Ray Hackett’s band and, if the steps and music were strange to some, no one seemed to mind, as all were being inoculated with the friendly spirit of our great university. Re- freshments were served and. if past experience holds true, there is no doubt that many new friendships were pledged over the punch bowl that evening. The expressed opinion of hosts and guests alike was that another wonderful Cal year had begun in the style to which we are accustomed. 16
